Here are the knives i brought: the Kabar USMC Fighting Knife, the Spydie Native, and my CRKT Point Guard

i must say that i'm pretty happy with the performance of all of the above, especially my native (i love that one sooooo much!) i have to be honest tho, when i say that i have abused my Kabar to the max, which is why i bought it in the first place. the day we arrived at our site, i immediately started digging away the rocks that were around the area. after that, i used it to hack at the sticks and logs and trees for wood (and for pleasure), then i used the handle to pound the hooks into the ground to hold our tent, then i threw it against a tree trunk to see if it would stay... i swear i did all of the above and then some, i know someone out there hates me now and would probably give me a lecture about warranties and what not  but good news is, my kabar survived! aside from the edge being duller (it could still cut nylon rope, but with two hacks instead of one) and it's black coating scratched, and the paint on the handle butt kinda chipping... it's perfectly alright, just needs a resharpening and a good polish. so kudos to the Kabar!

now for my native... this baby... i did not put it through nearly as much as the kabar, but i did a lot of wood working with the tip of the blade and still i could perform the finger cutting test. i also used it to cut small sticks off a dead tree and did various hacking jobs at bushes and still at the end of the trip could hack through nylon rope with one try. (gees, that sounds almost lame compared to what i did with my kabar)

as for the point guard, it was my tackle box knife...so, erm, it cut my worms fine? i didn't really put it through that much at all because i knew it wouldn't be able to take a whole lot.

so here are my reviews... any opinions/comments/complaints/advice please tell me!

hey BOK! where are your reviews?? :D

I was on that same camping trip but I have to say that I'm not as impressed with the Kabar as much as aXed is. It's definitely a solid knife and it did go through abuse but when it came down to it's intended cutting use I was a little dissapointed. The rope cutting test should've been nothing for that knife but it seems that the 1095 steel just could not hold a great edge. Sorry aXed don't mean to diss your knife at all ;) Just not happy with that rope test.

I will praise that Native though. Spyderco make some amazing serrations and with all the wood stabbing that that thing went through, the tip is still in near perfect condition.

Keep 'em sharp aXed and try not to slash anymore poor earthworms!!:D

i did not slash earth worms! i think you and that other kaffir of yours should stop abusing slugs

and yes, i do agree, if it's true what you said about the 1095 steel handling like aus 6, i'm hella dissappointed

Sometimes factory knives need a touch up when you get them...

Sharpen her up and have at it again.
This time leave out the rock digging ;)
and let us know how it goes.

You´re right! I bought an KA-BAR USMC in the german ebay. Unfortunatly it took quite a while (2 weeks from the one end of Germany to the other) till i got it. Yesterday I recieved it. I had not the time to do much tests with it, but I´m very surprised. It´s really shaving sharp and because of the high wight it cuts even bigger branches with just one cut an without any deformation of the edge. I´m really looking forward to do some more tests and "torture" the knife a little.
I think this is really a great knife, expecially for that price!

Jochen

P.S. I hope that my English was not too bad, because I wrote nothing in English since 1 1/2 years!

Even though I wasn't impressed with the edge I still think it's a good knife. It's very inexpensive and you don't feel so bad when you put the knife through some abuse.

I'm contemplating buying the short recurve Ka-bar myself but haven't heard much talk about it here on the forums.

1981 - your English was perfectly understandable ;)

Wow! I’m certainly too lazy to carry such abundant and heavy arsenal. Probably I would take to short camping trip my SPYDERCO Delica or Calypso Junior Lightweight and would be pretty happy with one of them :)

For somewhat longer and/or harder trip I would replace them with SPYDERCO Military folder or Bill Moran Featherweight fixed blade supporting it with decent medium sized axe. This could match all my camping needs, maybe excluding digging...

However I’m glad to hear you was happy with your choice :) This is the main going camping, isn’t it?
