So who's seeing this movie? I saw it on Friday night and am seeing it again (on a bigger screen) tomorrow, so obviously I enjoyed it.

The good: Overall entertainment value; fight choreography; interesting, almost painting-like backgrounds; Spartan one-liners straight outta Herodotus; Gerard Butler running around half-naked :o.

The huh?: The too-shortness of the final fight scene; the random giant crab-handed dude; the dialogue /blocking between Leonidas and Xerxes in that one scene (you will know what part this is).

Overall this gets a big hooray from my household. Anybody else see it yet?

yup, seein it again wednesday. "it's just an eye" HAH!

I actually said much the same thing to myself when I smashed my face into lava rock in Hawaii. "Well, it's my right eye and I focus with my left."

I thought it was good, but not great. 3.5 stars outta 5.

btw - My eye ended up being fine. The orbital ridge did it's job and protected it from harm.

You gotta love any movie where the soldiers are comical during battle. Pleasure to watch such well crafted imagery, to the point, and a great cast. Friggin loved that movie.

Excellent movie if you don't take it "seriously":D I got so sick of critics saying that it was too "cartoony" or "over the top" or "not accurate"...for cryin' out loud, folks! It's based on a graphic novel which was written as a fable of the heroic battle. That said, I loved the movie..as did my wife. We caught it on an IMAX screen which was well worth the extra couple of bucks. Normally, I'm not an IMAX fan. The screen is too big for me to drink it all in. However, with every battle scene being shot in slow-mo, I could just sit back, look left, look right and enjoy. I loved the battles, loved the ideals, loved the romance. It was everything I was hoping it would be.
It was a great movie that I would love to see again on the big screen. I was amazed that only ONE scene was shot outside. The rest was allllllll digital. It's a hit. Production costs are estimated to be around 60 million, and it made 70 in 3 days. The only down side...now my wife is after me to do some sit ups for those Spartan abs:rolleyes: ;):D
As I'm sure most of you know, if you are interested in a great fictional but more factual book (no goat heads or mythical monsters, etc) check out Gates of Fire. I picked it up a few months ago while anticipating this flick, and I couldn't put it down.

Remember a while back I talked about CrossFit? The workout regime that combines olympic weightlifting with rowing with running with gymnastics with you name it? The silly numbers of pullups, squats, overhead presses etc.?

The actors and stunt men of 300 went through about 8 weeks of gruelling workouts together, in a gym that was 'till recently an affiliate of CrossFit. That's what the results of "functional strength" training looks like, compared with bodybuilding.

The director and producers put them through the experience because they wanted the look of people who were actually strong, and they wanted the on-screen chemistry of people who'd suffered together. You can read about it at www. gymjones.com.

I really enjoyed everything however the random harmen scene reminded me a a cruel joke something about what do call a women with no arms or legs?

Very cool info, Tom:) Thanks! Those guys looked FIT, not just muscle bound, but literally fit like a professional warrior of ancient times would have had to have been. Reading the kind of training that soldiers of the time would have to go through, I think that would be a pretty accurate depiction.
I looked through the crossfit info that you posted a few months back and actually moddified a summertime workout routine for myself to do here at the office since I don't have as much time to get to the gym. Good stuff:thumbup:

Thanks for the link, Tom!

Made me tired just reading about it....:(

Can't wait to see the movie!

Gates of Fire is a good one. I should go read it again now...

I'd heard that the training they did for 300 was pretty intense, and the results were very impressive. One of the guys at work was complaining that you could see the makeup on the Spartan abs, as if you could paint abs on George Wendt and make it look like this:

I think that they did paint the abs in some of the wider angle scenes just to highlight them. I'm sure that the style of washout digital filming that they did muted the body lines. However, I wouldn't equate it to anything more than how a woman would apply blush to highlight her cheekbones. Or how actors of the silent era wore bleached makeup and eyeliner to capture their miming better. I'm glad they actually made the actors work out. I could just imagine how cost effective it would be to have their faces digitally mastered onto a CG body. I have to laugh at some of the reviews though. One such review said something to the effect that "300 is a film that finally bridges the gap between recruitment video and gay porn.":D One thing is for certain, no matter your taste in movies or mates...300 has something for everybody.

This one is on my list to see at the theater.

With four boys, and in consideration of the price of movie tickets, popcorn, etc., taking the family to a movie has become a rather expensive undertaking. With 300's 'R' rating, I have a ready excuse to leave the little ones at home and go see it with my wife or a buddy.

Very good idea. It's a hard R, for sure. However, well worth seeing it in the theater.

The younger generation is trying to drag me to see it...they've already been once.

Guess I ought to "man up" and go...
