The 3rd time is the charm!! (My forge construction)

My George I believe I got it. I am currently putting the final touches on my 3rd forge. The first one was to big, the second was to square, but the 3rd I think is going to do the trick.

Its not completely finished yet. I am still going to put a door on it, cure the satanite, put a coat of ITC - 100 on it, then install a 1in tall fire brick in there.

Specs:
Propane tank (aprox 12in x 12in I think)
3 layers of inswool around with an added strip on the bottom (making it 4 on the bottom) from Ellis. http://refractory.elliscustomknifeworks.com/
2 layers of inswool on the back
Indian Geroge's burner design. http://www.indiangeorgesknives.com/building_a_forge.html
blower from http://www.blacksmithsdepot.com/Tem...ducts/Forges_and_Parts/blowers/164_CFM_Blower

This is what I have currently:

These are the mostly Empty shells of my other 2 attempts. (The beginning of a forge grave yard):

When I get it completely finished I'll post again. Tomorrow I am going to cure it then put a coat of ITC on it, then start shaping my insboard door. :) Any criticisms are welcome.

Thanks for the support,

Good job, Jimmy! Hope this is "the one"!!:)

Did you pass that chemistry exam or write "Satanite" and "ITC100" into all the answers daydreaming forges? ;)

I hope so too. If its not I am going to be mad  for about 5 hours cry for 15min then start building another one. :) I have a good feeling about this one though because the burner isn't going to have to work so hard to heat up the inside, and it's round shape is going to spread that heat all over. I also like the way it looks with my pipeing :D :jerkit: :) The reason it's crazy like that is because I didn't feel like making another bracket for my blower, the T was there from the square forge, and I kinda liked the idea of a lot of pipe runing to the blower.... looks more machanical.

BTW with that chemistry, it wasn't an exam, but a test. I aced it also :). Our exams are right before we get off for christmass. Kinda a way for the school to say "Merry Christmass". On the note of chemistry. We are learning some about how when electrons get exited they move farther away from the nucleous and to a higher energy level. I am not sure, but am under the impression that metal expands when it is heated. Is this why?

Looks fine, Jimmy. It's gonna roar like a dragon and do just what you want. I'd still put that needle valve in if you can afford a decent one.

Glad to hear you aced the chemistry test.....chem paid my bills for the last 35 years. ;)

As for expanding and everything else...chemistry is essentially all about the electrons and which orbitals they are occupying, yes. I had a high school chem teacher who used to periodically shout out "follow the electrons". Probably had to be there.... LOL

I cranked her up today to cure the Satanite then I put on another layer. Tomorrow I am going cure the new layer then put in a layer of ITC - 100.

I got in my insboard, so I am going to start constructing a door. Tomorrow also.

This is it running:

3 layers of inswool keeps it nice and chilly on the out side.

I was wondering how long I should let my ITC - 100 sit before starting up the forge and curing it. 12 hours?

Is there a vortex to the flame in the chamber now?

I am sad to say I wan't paying enough attention :jerkit: . I'll check tomarow when I cure the second layer. I sure hope it does....

JR: Looking good. You should tell your mother that you will cook Xmas dinner in it.
For all of you Jimmy is Jimmy Keeton JR. going forward we should refer to him as Junior.:D :D :D What do you guys think????? or :thumbdn: maybe :jerkit: HEHEHEHE!!!

Looks great! One thought/suggestion: If you are going to use that much pipe between the blower and the burner's opening, why not introduce the gas much earlier. The higher up you put the gas, the better gas/air mix you will get, which equals a better burn in your forge.

LOL! .... I was wondering if yall had any ideas on door design. I have 1sq foot of inboard.

Cut the hole undersized and work up to where you like it. Can't put it back....

IG, you sure do use that new smiley a lot....you're gonna go blind! ;)

I.G.- he's atleast a year and half my senior, so he's simply "J."
You had me scared there at first though- I thought you'd adopted him as I.G. Jr., and that it was too late for his salvation:eek: . Jimmy- I reccomend that you run far,far way, and put I.G. on ignore before he corrupts you:foot: :D .

Speaking of which- how's the Indian doing?

p.s.- as I said over on knifenetwork- looks great! Firebrick door is what I'd go with.
p.p.s.- We're going to have to get a Runyan-Keeton collab going soon. I wonder what a knife created by two kids who aren't legal yet would be worth... I'm sure there'd be a collecter interested... Fun stuff either way:)

Dinner cooked in 3.5sec a new world record. :D

BTW I'll make sure to post tomarow about the vortex of my flame.
