The 417 In Other Handle Or Steel Options?

Dear Benchmade,

Any plans for the 417 in other handle or steel options? I dislike aluminum handles as they get banged up and can get sharp spots were the metal has been dinged. Metal handles also suck to hold onto in the winter cold.

I'm sure others would like a different steel but I can live with S30V if I don't have another choice. Grivory or G10 would be great but please hold that greasy feeling Versaflex.

Would anyone else be interested in the 417 in different flavors?

I'd never argue against variety. G10 gets chipped up and sharp too if you drop it, what are you left to do? Sand it down a little maybe? I'd guess you can do that too with aluminum. It's -13 where I live as I type this and cold handles in the winter time :D?? I survive just fine with my with my metal handled knives! It's only cold for a little bit.

Yes, and for the reasons you noted. I like the design but metal handles are a "no go" in my decision making. They can get too hot in the summer and cold in the winter, not withstanding the tolerances of others here :) Aluminum and steel are the worst. G10 is fine, particularly if it is not polished to the point of slippery when wet. S30V is a good steel, but when a person owns a lot of knives, that person can be picky about purchases. I don't buy just for looks, but because I think I'll actually carry a knife, so I want it to perform. S30V is a good performer, but I got me some already, so justifying the next purchase means something has to seem better. In other words, I want steels that will cut all day and never need sharpening!

I'm also hoping this gets the 940 treatment.

I was super excited for the Fact til I saw it was an aluminum/steel sandwich. That combo seems to me the worst of both worlds; you don't get the thinness of all steel or the lightness of all aluminum. I'd take all of either in a heartbeat (love the all aluminum 940), but I expect a g10 or carbon fiber version replacing the aluminum is more likely, which still would be better than the current iteration (for me).

Aluminum on steel liners is why I have stayed away from the Presidios as well, though I really like the designs (both original and current).

I suspect we will see several carbon fiber & G10 versions, probably dealer exclusives coming out in the next year or two, if the 417 sells well. Then, maybe some Ti liner versions, or a full Ti handled version.

Alright then, everybody else needs to load up, so I can get one in CF or G10 without having to buy and sell an aluminum one ;)
