When the axis lock first came out I picked up a 710. I didn't really like it much, the handles mainly. The same holds true with the 940. I didn't care much for it, and I got rid of them both.

Well with everyone ranting and raving over these two knives, I decided to throw in a 710 with my Para Military 2 order... It's nothing like I remembered it.
This knife is worth every penny. I really like it, and it doesn't feel chincy like I remembered it. So now I need a 940. It has to be good too, with all the raves it gets.

I currently own 4 different models of the 710 in ATS-34, M390, and D2. They are as solid as ever. The ATS-34 versions I own were the first models of the knife produced (I think).

I love the 710; have five of them. The first Benchmade I ever saw was a 710HS and it took me by storm, the thing was so cool. First Axis model and all, it's just a great knife, congrats on getting one!

I think my current list is a first-year ATS-34, M2, M4 and M390. It's a great knife, a definite classic. Unlike the OP, I loved my first 710 from the get-go and never sold it. :)

I was about to pull the trigger on one at a local store...felt great in hand and looked great! Saw the pricetag...$190 with D2 steel...I like to support local stores and all, but come on...

Dang, 190? I know all about overhead but mine was 115 shipped.

I'm going to order a M390 710 and a S30V 940 both BK coated:thumbup:

I bought a 710D2 for my Dad for his birthday several years ago from Knifeworks, I don't know exactly when, maybe 2007. I had never even seen one before, but I thought it looked like a good user. I had it sent directly to him and didn't see it until I visited him for Christmas 8 months later. I liked it so much I bought one for myself right after I got home. I carried and used that knife today. I later bought a 710-2 and a 710-101, but have never actually used either. I carry autos most of the time, but when I know I'll need a workhorse, I always grab the 710D2. I bought a new (used) house a month ago and I've been using it more than ever doing repairs. I checked it just now and it doesn't shave hairs anymore, so I'll be pulling out the Wickededge tomorrow.

I have 2 The D2 and the M4 (open back with standoffs)
I can't get the M4 version right. It's blade play is extreme. Even when tightened to a point of needing two hands to open, it still plays.
Taken it apart, polished the washers and blade, used tuff glide, no difference. The blade is also off center which does not change tight or loose.
The D2 version is perfection so I'm wondering if this common amongst the M4 versions? Or maybe I just got a lemon.
I want it to work so badly, I am just trying to avoid sending it in.
Anyone have this experience?
Cheers

if it didnt work out of the box you should just send it in. the steel type would have nothing to do with the overall fit of the assembled knife

Thanks Pete3
Was thinking more the run not the steel. I believe the M4 was a dealer exclusive. I was hoping that someone else may have, or had one.
Probably will send it in though.
Cheers.
