The 7Oz Mini Hatchet Chopping Down A Tree

A couple of days ago I decided to take down a cedar. I took my SAK trekker and with the saw cut off a piece of sycamore for a handle and back cut the sides off, put the 7oz mini hatchet head on, put a pipe clamp around it with the SAK screwdriver and started to chop the tree. I also had my Kabar heavy bowie along. The little head of course outchopped the kabar (without a baton) by a HUGE margin.

Today I had a scap piece I cut off a bo staff so I did up a quick handle again for the little guy. Again, chopping down this cedar was not bad at all. The bit is thicker then the bowie and doesn't stick in as much with the geometry, much quicker to take the tree down with the little hatchet then the bowie.

Really liking this little piece of steal! Fits in your backpocket

Do you have more details on the head? Did you make it? I have a gb mini and it's a really nice chopper. My only gripe is that I wish the haft was longer like how yours is pictured.

Hey Shotgun!

I found mine a couple years ago in a house. the handle I just use whatever I want at the time. I've thought about putting a slot on my cut down bo staff for a mini fokos but I think I'll use an actual hawk head. Anyway, any dowel or field expedient piece of wood will work.

heres some 7-8 oz head hatchets

Making a quick handle with a pipe clamp is well... quick!

It almost looks like that tiny Vaughn Hatchet that Bark River turned into their mini hatchet.

I have an older tiny one that I got off ebay a while back like that that is marked HARTWELL and say Paul Bunyon

interesting guys! I can't find any marks on it. I just know that with my SAK or any saw, and a pipe clamp it's quite easy to make a field expedient handle for chopping, or if you want this wihtout a handle for using as a way to start a split with a baton, then follow it through with a wood wedge. It can also combo side to side with a blade for splitting to add more thickness hence a thicker wedge.

The Vaughn Hatchet Hollow Dwellar spoke of came with a sticker, not stamped. Craft'sman made one that size but they are marked. Sharpen it up and make your own mini sized hatchet.

I have one of the little Estwing 14a hatchets. That thing is small enough that it can be carried in a blue jean back pocket, and yet chops and splits kindling well.

I have a similar sized Norlund that is a fantastic small hatchet.

These little guys are so easy to carry and so efficient in use I am surprised they are not more popular than they are.
