OK. I've had this piece of Red Gum sitting around for years. Like easily 10. This piece along with a bunch of others have just been sitting out in the elements, they are hard as rock. Around the start of the year I split some pieces up with my old Team Gemini but I could never get through this bastard knot.

I tried with my TGLB, NMFBM, ASHBM - couldn't do it. I even tried making wooden wedges - NOPE, no chance.

Low and behold, I got my DSSF in the mail today and gave it a belting. First test? The 90 degree knot. What do ya know? It blasted through it!!!!!

Very satisfying to finally crack open this twisted, tough and gnarly piece of wood.

DSF is one of my 'must get one day' knives, pretty much at the top of the list!

The handle takes a second to get used to but I really love the knife. Not much of a chopper but I didn't buy it for that! It's a fighter. It has slayed a few wooden enemies already and is eagerly awaiting more tree blood :D

Well, all the knives before it probably weakened the knot allowing that toothpick to get through:D

At any rate Im impressed.
Growin up we always burned wood. I always busted everything up with a Go-Devil. I was prolly about 14, when one day my dad told me to bust a certain piece of wood up. I said ok. By that time, (14) I was really good at bustin wood and strong to boot. Well, I reared back and let her go. Upon contact that go devil bounced straight back up in the air lol......it was black gum.
Later on in years we finally got a wood splitter and it wouldnt touch that black gum. Red, black - gum is a real Bastard.

No doubt the other blades loosened her up but honestly I don't think it did much. That thing is a ROCK. I have broke at least 5 batons just trying to get through that knot. Probably spent over 2 hours on it LOL

MacLaren1, thanks for sharing, Red Gum is tough stuff. Haven't tried Black Gum but i'm sure it's just as bad!

Lol...oh, your welcome buddy. Believe me I know just what your talkin about. The stuff is amazingly tough. Especially the damn knots....hard core for sure.
And I live in the highest elevation east of the Mississippi. We have a lot of great eastern hardwoods, so I feel confident callin gum a Bastard.
