New rule: Add 40%

When forum members are asked for advice on which knife to buy on a budget, no matter what dollar amount a person says they are able to spend on a new knife, always add 40% to their amount and suggest a "better" knife.

Why not disregard everything they have to say, and just tell them what knife you want to buy next? :D

Actually, I'd say we do a pretty good job here. When given a limit, we usually give the best answer we can under that limit. But we also give the "if you spend just a couple dollars more, you can get XXXX, and it's considerably better" answer. Then there's those that answer every question, even "what's the best folder under $50" with the answer "Sebenza". :p

Maybe we can run an auto-reply daemon to do just that? It just has to search for a question mark and post the response. :D
rofl, i'll do the programing (actually im a tad rusty)

EDIT: for contribution, I like the , recomend a few options w/in range and then a few better options outside of the range given. The worst thing is when someone has a price and all they get is stuff that is either a square trying to fit into a triangle hole, or too much $$.

It would be best if we simply answered all inquiries with either "Sebenza" or "Sharpmaker".

Except in the Balisong forum where the proper reply is either Benchmade 42 or Sharpmaker.

Well the Spyderco Caly Jr. should be the answer for under 50 and over 50 the sebbie can take it.

Two answers on knives, tactical=Benchmade Slipjoint= an older Case ( i know some will disagree on the slippy).

There are knives available in ~anyone's~ price range. And for the most part the recommendations posted are usually reasonable. OldTimer, Mora, Opinel, and KaBar Dozier have been mentioned so many times on the forums... Should be a sticky on top, "What knife can I buy for under $20?"

Best Wishes,
Bob

We should also remember that inexperienced people's budgets are out often out of kilter with the price points in the market. It's the same with bicycles. I went looking for a road bike with a budget of $1500 (AUS) then realised that at the time the price points were 1200 and 2000 - there was really nothing in between.

never bring up pedal cycles on a knife forum. I found out the hard way

it seems the idea of big cost elsewhere gets the same effect on non knife people to why pay more for a knife

Heck yeah! I'm all for the 40% rule!, except I think it's a bit too.....mild....

I think the 40% minimum should also apply to size and weight.

For example:

Casper Milquetoast posts: "Hi guys! I'm looking for a small cute knife for going to church on Sundays. It needs to have a two inch blade, no lock, and cost less than $50.... I haven't owned a folding knife since I was a Cub Scout and just don't know where to start with all the choices..."

Bad Voodoo Jim posts: GITCHA SELF A BUSSE BATTLE MISTRESS!!! IT'S THE BEST KNIFE OUT THERE FOR CHOPPING UP HEAVY EQUIPMENT!!!

This of course would be followed by multiple posts suggesting Striders, Tops, HI's, Beckers, etc.....

The farther the price and dimensions are overshot, the better the advice! errrr....uhmmmm....right? :D

What's the deal with Opinel? I have one. It was a gift. And it's a genuine POS. I wouldn't spend a dime on one much less suggest anyone else buy one. What am I missing?

Look, I don't want to start any wars here. But, seriously, I don't understand the Opinel thing. So many people praise them. Whenever someone lists the "must have knives," someone always suggests Opinel. Obviously, I'm missing something. Will someone please explain the Opinel thing to me?

Chuck, it's like the Calypso jr. thing. It just cuts and cuts, has a pretty comfortable handle, locks safely, and is 8$. What else is there to know? it just performs well, due to edge geometry, I guess.
