I have enjoyed the opportunity to review each of David Darom’s "Custom Knifemakers of the World" series of books. David has done an incredible job of covering a wide spectrum of both knifemakers and types/styles of custom knives in just three books.
As with all of David’s books, the images in “The Art Knives of Van Barnett & Dellana” are breathtaking and the book’s overall quality is outstanding. However, David goes much further in helping readers know and understand Van and Dellana as individuals, husband and wife and of course as world renowned knifemakers.
Both Van and Dellana draw from their extensive art backgrounds and take great pride in sole-authorship approaches to creating their beautiful and artistic knives. This book offers collectors and knifemakers an extraordinary educational opportunity as David takes us step by step through both Van and Dellana creating elaborate art folders. Readers are exposed to the entire process, from the forging of Damascus steel to the meticulous finishing of these knives revealing many interesting techniques and processes.
David has again given us a glimpse into the knifemaker’s world, sharing more than just the knives. This book follows Van and Dellana's lives from their early years as young artists to their present status of being among the most accomplished creators of ART Knives in the world and both being voted in as attending knifemakers of the prestigious Art Knife Invitational.
“The Art Knives of Van Barnett & Dellana” shares an abundance of knives from their first to masterpieces which are in private collections and have had very limited exposure. As one would expect, Van and Dellana have collaborated on a number of projects and David has dedicated the final section of the book to these extraordinary knives.
In addition to the beautiful knives “The Art Knives of Van Barnett & Dellana” is a blending of two stories of artists searching for and not only finding and fore filling their passions for art and creativity, but finding one another.
I always enjoy the knifemaker's quotes from David's books. He are two of my favorites included in this fine book:
Van Barnett “I’ve always tried to make my dreams, thoughts and emotions show themselves in the knives that I create, realizing that I am continuously learning new techniques that will hopefully make the next one better than the last. I’m still searching for that perfect knife that hopefully doesn’t exist. This keeps me going, using my creativity and imagination and most of all my heart to create beautiful knives, giving in them a part of myself for everyone to see and enjoy”
Dellana “For me, the ultimate state of perfection in knife design is when all parts flow as one whole creation while functioning together to optimum standards. There is nothing jarring to the eye or to the hand, everything in the folder is flowing – delightfully and joyfully. Achieving this demands a great deal of forethought in the initial concept, as well as being willing to spontaneously accept a new idea as being better during the process and taking the time to create it.”
more to come
