I buy an issue, once in a while depending on the contents for that issue. Two others I find very good are Wilderness Way magazine (4 issues a year) and the Bulletin of Primitive Technology (2 issues a year).

Another great mag (and especially great because they allow access to some content from each issue for free online) along the same vein is Backwoods Home Magazine. www.backwoodshome.com. Same sort of stuff- shooting, growing food, building a water tank, skinning game, etc, etc.

Plus, the famed Massad Ayoob is a regular columnist!

This mag really makes we want to buy a farm and live off the land :D

I have almost every issue and read and reread it,I really like the older ones but the new issues are real good also.

Backwoodsman should be required reading for members of this particular forum. As a regular reader, and occasional contributer, for almost fifteen years, I've picked up uncountable pointers and projects from it. I also love the frontier history articles.

You won't find reviews of the latest three ounce backpack, or the newest GPS software, or self-starting stoves, but you will find out how to get by if you lose them.

i agree, in the last issue it showed how to make a "hobo stove" out of a coffee can, and how to cook food using MUD. there was also a very good article on the benefits of having and using long blades

Backwoodsman is now my favorite magazine.
It is full of old school skills and tricks. The subjects are quite varied; everything from fishing, hunting, trapping, building, blacksmithing, survival, you name it. Last month's issue even had an article on weapons used by pirates. Plus lots of articles on old guns and knives. Check out the add on the inside of the back cover; lots of old knives real cheap.

TIZWIN is right about it being required reading.

Wilderness Way should also be required reading.

Both these magazines are full of old and primitive skills that are almost completely lost in today' world.

I just re enlisted for a new 3 year sub, really good magazine. Knife related, I really enjoy Dan Shectmans and Dean Hazukas knife articles. It has definitely piqued my interest in black powder shooting, something I had no interest in before, even though my father had shot black powder in his youth.

Excellent. I got tired of paying $$ for "catalogs" purporting to be magazines a long time ago.

WVHills, I'm glad you started this thread; I never heard of those magazines but they're just what I'm interested in

I love Backwoodsman. I've been reading it for the past five years. I love that its just a simple booklet. Nothing fancy. But the BEST content! If you can pick up 'Best of Backwoodsman' 1-3. Great stuff!

I get a copy every month , lots of good old ( and new ) articles, does anyone remember the tip about cutting the leg off of a old pair of jeans sewing up the end cuff and using it for a hidden gun cover ?

Don't just buy and read Backwoodsman, SAVE them. You can't remember everything you read, so create your own library. Stuff in this magazine can be invaluable if we ever need to live rough for a time. Written knowledge is the power to do and teach others to do, and alot of old-time information is slowly fading away.

Something else to consider about the BackWoodsman is that if you like it, a lifetime subscription is something like $250. I don't have it in front of me, but I recall thinking that at my age, that's actually a pretty good deal.

backwoodsman is an excellant magazine..... i'm planning on subscribing one of these days... i do buy it on a regular basis..

I just finnished the catorgorizing Of the whole 2006 year with every article in its own little place to find the one I am looking for easier.
