So I just got back from a two day run, and in the mail I found the little package I've been waiting for from TKC. My G-10 Becker scales have arrived.
I decided to put the orange and black scales on my BK-9, the Baconator, since it looked great. The Midnight Tiger scales were begging to be put on the Naked 5, which I just freshly steel-wooled the patina from.
First of all, I can't say enough about the quality of the scales. They are perfectly ground, and both sets are identical in size and shape. You can tell that these were CNC-made rather than hand made, given the consistency in shape and size.
The G-10 scales are heavier than the grivory, which adds a little heft to the knives. The scales have been textured to be grippy, yet not too grippy. In my opinion, they're perfectly textured. Even when sweaty, you're hand isn't going to slip.
The contours are very nice. In fact, the TKC scales fit my hand better than any other Becker scales out there. They are a bit thinner than the factory scales, noticeably so at the bottom palm swell. One problem I've always had with the factory scales is that with my hand, the bottom palm swell is too big and makes the blade cant off to the right when held in a natural grip, which makes chopping less accurate than I'd like. The narrower bottom swell makes the blade line up better in my hand, which I appreciate.
Here's the Baconator with its grivory-scaled sister 9, Big Bad Mama, for comparison.
And in my hand.
If you happen to be like Dubz and have hands the size of basketballs, the TKC scales might be a bit small for you, but I've got pretty big hands, and I found they fit great. I did some feathersticks and chopped a small log in half with no discomfort.
The Midnight Tigers on the Naked 5 are just awesome.
I gotta give TKC and Dale Stoops props in getting these out so quickly into the hands of Beckerheads. I'm going to have to get myself a few more sets of these. I need one set each for the re-released BK-10 I'm going to get, along with my BK-7 and my second BK-2.
