I have recently started martial arts lessons again. I used to teach years ago, but have moved and taken a few years off to get fat and lazy. I started up again and made a deal with the studio owner to make him a knife in lieu of a few month's tuition.

In retrospect, I could sell the knife for a lot more than I am getting in trade, but, as you know, a deal is a deal.

I like it anyways, it is a merging of 2 designs I came up with previously.

Thanks Spearz,

Recognize the handle? He saw a pic of the L6 spear point I made you and wanted the handle from that knife on the blade of a different one.

Big sturdy knife like that is a keeper...

I do recognize the handle and choil area, many a hand would like the shape of that handle. Ok I bet there is a template.

Especially if the lessons aren't one on one and there is adequate room, the instructor is getting a better deal, as his margin on one more body in a class is extremely low. However, unless he held a gun to your head it is still a reasonable trade. In the future you can decide if the extra $ from selling a knife vs. the ease of trading straight up is worth it or not. :)

the lessons arent one on one, and the tuition for the amount of months that I agreed with the knife are quite a bit less than what I would have charged for the finished blade. Live and learn.

I'm very impressed with the design/execution and symmetry of the handle. That shows a lot of skill and talent.

I appreciate the comments guys. Get this... after I make it for the guy and show it to him, he calls me and said that it wasnt exactly what he wanted, he wants something smaller. I agree to make him a smaller knife, so someday soon, this one will be going onto the for sale forums. Guess you cant please everyone. I suppose the bad deal is getting slightly better.

Matthew,

Nice knife, It looks totally functional.

Are you training in your original style or are you trying something new?

I am allowed 2 classes a week. I am doing judo, which I have trained in before (mostly jujitsu, some judo) and Thai kickboxing, which I havent done, but it is similar to some of the karate that I have done previously. I dont quite feel like a duck out of water, but I certainly dont feel on the top of my game either. I took about 3 years off when I moved, and 3 years of a sedentary lifestyle can do wonders for endurance and conditioning.

Three years off, will maybe, make you a little rusty. Not quiet as fast as you remember. I think you're just a couple of bruises away from being in shape.
