I recently obtained a Damascus Skinner blade blank. Kinda unusual as the blade is not pointed.
The forger didn't like the blade and didn't even sharpen it out to the end (about a 1/16 back). Plus, he went crazy on pin holes.
I got it FREE!
I used it as a practice blank as I have been scaling blanks for the fun as I am retired. No a cheap hobby as I have had to but bench tools. I still need a decent grinder as a belt sander/disk sander and drum sanders for the drill press seem to be a little imprecise (or is it my old eyes and hands?, nah, it's lack of talent).
Anyway, I started to log this project, but was making so many mistakes, I didn't.
I decided to grind down the handle to make it MUCH smaller, redrill the pins, use SS pins and thong tube, and some grey G9 I got from Canmanstan a few weeks back.
The dimensions of the blank is 5 5/8 AOL. Blade length 1 7/8. Weight before the grind was 4.3 oz. I cut the handle down (even MORE than the pics before scaling) to give a thin top to bottom profile. I cut in jimping. The handle is three finger and the choils perfectly fit MY hand.
Without a sheath (next on the purchase list) and the fob, it now weighs 2.3 oz! Almost necker! But I am going to make a pocket carry instead.
I absolutely love the thing now! And I have less than $15.00 in it, plus 8-10 hours work.

Here is the blank when I got it. Notice how the tip is thicker than it should be, and PLENTY of pin holes!

Here is my first grind. Notice how I moved the second finger choil back when I re profiled the blade. The way it was my big dumb middle finger sit right on the peak. Uncomfortable, to say the least.

I actually ended up cutting a 1/6 more all around, and reset the angle at the thumb rest. This was to cut the jimping at more of an angle.

Well, I skipped the log to here, sorry.
Here is the finished knife. The Grey G9 changes in 3D as the blade is rotated, so it's hard to say just what pattern it is. I took it down to 600 grit and WD40'd it. It's plenty grippy. And now you can see why I call it the Bay Wolf. It's got a Tex Avery (look it up, LOL) The Wolf head on the fob.

Here it is with a 7 1/4 AOL Damascus Tanto I'm still working on (my 2nd project). Will do a thread on it, later. (my 2nd project).

Ditto (look real close and you can see the Black Opal setting in the Tanto handle).

I hope to get Michael Morris to make me a pocket sheath similar to his Pocket Filer one. We'll see.

And one more

Well, it's not the greatest, but I'll keep it until I die.

I hope you keep it long, long time. :D
You did a nice job on what looked like an unpromising blank.
