I'm curious as to what other members think is the one knife that can pretty much do it all. I know that there really isn't such a thing, but if you only had one knife, custom or production, what would it be? I would like to limit this to folders only. I ask, because I recently received a Mayo TNT, and as far as being something that is a low maintenance, high performance tool, that i can carry anywhere. I feel that this is it! My only concern is that it may be a little small for some things, which is why I'm considering getting a super size model. What are some others opinions?

For me, a be all, end all knife would be a custom forged bowie, from a noted smith, since folders are very limited. Differentially treated carbon steel, solid guard, large blade (10"+), comfortable handle, quick in the hand. A knife with those specs. will do anything I need a knife to do.

The BM 710 with M-2 steel and combo edge blade would have to be my choice. It has one of the strongest locks on the market. It is smoother than just about anything else. It is truly ambidextrous. And best of all, the Axis lock is well designed against wear. Combine these fantastic strengths of the Axis lock with an M-2 combo (serrations for rope, hemp, etc.) which will hold an amazing edge and is not prone to chipping, and you have it all. The knife is sturdy and almost slim, has the 3.9" blade, is extremely well-balanced, good ergos, and has durable G-10 scales. It may not be as pretty as an LCC, or as chunky and immediately impressive-looking as a SERE 2000, but who cares? The 710 is about as an all around great utility/defense folder as exists. This knife will LAST.

Well, there is no way that a folder is going to be my be-all, end-all knife, but I will say this: I can afford any working folder made, custom or production, but if I had to toss out every folder in my collection except one, the folder I would keep would be the the Benchmade 710HS McHenry and Williams Axis lock with M-2 blade steel.

The handle is big and comfortable. The blade has good cutting geometry, and a good point. It is narrow enough to make a good paring and utility knife. The M-2 blade is tough, takes a great edge, and holds it a long time. It is very strong, and very reliable. For my uses, there is no better folder for any price.

There can never be a "be all end all knife". That is precisely why this hobby is so interesting. If there wee such a thing we would have resolved the ultimate knife design ten thousand years ago. Instead we have found that different knives are advantageous depending on our objectives, our environment, our skills, and our physical abilities.

The best any of us can do is to select the optimum knife for whatever it is we personally do most often.

How about a REKAT Sifu? It might be just a tad on the "too large" side for SOME applications. In that case, I'd also have to choose the REKAT Pioneer II as a "do all & anything" knife.

Either one of those two are made with the excellent ATS-34 steel, have G-10 scales, and are built to last AT LEAST a lifetime.

Only ONE folder? Forever and ever? Okay, I'll play; Strider GB Custom Folder. This thing will never break no matter what kind of hell I put it through. I'm very fond of Emerson Commanders as well, but the Strider is way thicker and built for serious abuse.

Only one folder -

very hard but ok i could live with this,
but i would carry three of them!

Because NO knife can do what my second knife can do:
Cut anything after i got rid of my first knife!!

Maybe i do not need different knives, but surely more than one!

I'm with Glockman - the sifu is a great knife for everything. Defensive folder - you bet! But it's also not bad at all for utilitarian uses... It is a little clunky in the pocket, but that 12" o.a.l. is worth it!But if it is too big, the pioneerII can handle whatever you throw at it.

I too have to go with the SIFU. Only, I want one of the 1-hole, D2 enhanced Forum editions. From preliminary reports, the steel is very corrosion resistant, and takes the D2 edge. Held at the rear of hte handle, one can chop to a decent extent with it. Its a leetle long for fine, delicate work. Great lock, great steel, BIG. What more could one ask for?

I don't really believe there is such a knife, but an Ed Fowler Pronghorn comes about as close as anything, in my opinion.
