Been researching knives used by early hunters and explorers (non bowie type) and came across The Bear. Story goes, early guns were not accurate and sometimes even if you hit what you were aiming for you just pissed them off. Second line of defence was in your belt.

Thus: The Bear.. 3/16" O1 11" overall 2" width about 60-61rc

There is a Currier and Ives print of just such an encounter. The woodsman is using a knife very similar.
