So do you think I can get an edge on this with my sharpmaker?

:D:D:D

First up I want to thank Oregon Fal'er for the giveaway and the knife. It is a huge hunk of steel.

So looking at it I am assuming (someone please chime in) that this knife has not been heat treated.

This is looking like a project that is beyond my means so I am going to see if I can talk one of our local knife makers into helping bring this beauty back to life.

Won't drop names yet because I don't want to put anyone on the spot if they don't want to take it on.

Anyway, hopefully this knife can get the spa treatment and come back and pose for some beauty shots.

I kind of have some ideas as to what I want to see with this but feel free to throw out ideas. I just don't want the destiny of this blade to be a big ole paperweight. What say you?

I cant help you but I sure have been looking forward to seeing what you do with that blank.

Me too. Times like this I wish I had some knife making skills but alas, I just know how to cut stuff. :) Should be fun and interesting all the same.

That is a fine looking knife blank. I would definitely have a pro manage it for me though. Just imagine, you could have a full convex BK9.

Convex is just a given. That I know for sure it will have. This thing is heavy as hell. Didn't expect it to be such a brick.

Not heat treated because grinding out a heat treated blank would be tedious and take forever. Good luck man. I dreamt of getting one of those and going to town, its gonna be a monster i can tell ya that. Good stuff Oregon

That Camillus BK9 should turn out amazing with a 1/4" full convex. I wish there was a Ka-Bar made special edition that was 1/4".

I've been hunting around for an old Camillius version BK9 in any condition for a " beast" project knife. I really like the current BK9 and how nimble it feels for a large knife, but for fun I have a few mod ideas for the old 1/4" version. They make the 3/16 BK9's feel like neckers.

Good luck with it and i look forward to the updates.

Nice. I've been dabbling in knifemaking, and taught myself to make a sheath today from an excellent tutorial. That looks like a really fun project. Definitely would love some WIP pics.

Get some files, mark a centerline, clamp off the plunges with some steel, clamp it to the bench and start hacking away at it. Should be pretty easy with that black to watch your bevels and lines.

1/4" ??? I never even knew those existed.. but again I really don't know much anyway....

call around some local steel plants and see if one of them has a rockwell machine, you can test to see if its been hardened.. (hard way..)

or, take a double cut file and see how easy it is to cut into.. (easy way..)

you could make a jig fairly easy, buy a couple quality files, and little by little at your leisure start your bevel, before you know it you'd be done.. (hard way..)

or, you could send it to someone and have them deal with it... :) (easy way..)

either way its a chunk of history !!>>

It should be .210 thick.

OFFICIALLY they quoted .25 in some literature. what can you do? :)

otherwise, i don't know where and why people get so BENT out of shape about .25 thick knives.

thin is in baby :>

I was starting to wonder if you got it. I'll be watching this progress.

Yeah it was waiting for me when I got home yesterday. Almost didn't fit in the mailbox haha. It sure is a brick for sure. I appreciate the kind gesture on your part. Hopefully can make this one into a looker. Best way to do that is to keep me away from it. :)

If you need some Camillus Grivory for it let me know.
