So I got the bug and I thought I would get started! I just have the profile done right now though. I am using all hand tools and I don't have any experience really, but it is fun!

I have a couple of questions, and I hope I posted in the right section. First, should I sand the pin holes out of the steel before I file the bevels, or does it matter? Second, How do I keep the place on the spine where the blade starts to drop, crisp? Can this be done with files, or do I need a grinder for that?

Any comments, suggestions or anything is appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi, I just started my first knife 3 weeks ago. I learned a lot of my beginners knowledge from youtube. If you search "knife making stock removal" you can find really helpful videos on how to make your knife from the beginning to the end. I used a belt sander to form my bevel and then I rough sanded the entire knife with it. The bevel came out pretty good but I think next time I will use a file because there will be much more control. When you say "keep the place on the spine where the blade starts to drop crisp" do you mean the left edge of the bevel near the handle? If so, I saw a video on youtube. Here's the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0RS2tIvJ_o He talks about it at around 6 minutes in. I never tried the technique but he used a piece of wood as a stop where he wanted the crisp line. He then used a file against the wood stop to make that line before he started the bevel. Like I said, I'm no expert at all and I haven't tried that method yet but it seemed to work for him. My advice would be to go slow and enjoy the entire process. I have been working on my knife for 28 hours so far and I still have to install and shape the handle, sharpen the knife, and make or buy a sheath for it. It's been a blast the whole time making the knife and right after this one is done I am going to make another. I hope your having as much fun as I am! Enjoy.

Thank you both for your fast responses. Both of those videos are awesome! I will repost when I have an update on the blade.
