Well, the title pretty much says it all, I would like to know what you folks think the best hawk I can get for $20.00 or less (not including shipping) is.

I was recommended the Cold Steel Trail, and I checked it out, but...

I just want to know what you people who are experts at this stuff think.
Also, if I were to shop around locally, what are some good vs. bad features to look for? Dimensions?

Thanks.

I can say that in that price range you are not going to be disappointed with a CS hawk (I have the Rifleman hawk, bad ax, special forces shovel, and GI tanto that are all used for throwing).

I personally don't know of another hawk for $20, but search the forum for cheap hawk, or inexpensive hawk or something like that. I remember seeing something about other hawks in that price range.

I have been throwing the Rifleman hawk for years ( I even occasionally get to use it for actually chopping wood and camping).

I am not an expert, but I do throw a lot.
the CS hawks are not perfect. But I have heard a lot of other users say they are the best value.

Also there are good pics of other user's customizing them with good looking results.

if you do get a CS hawk, there are a few tings you should do. First is buy a replacement handle if they have one. The handles last a long time even with bad throws if you follow the second point. Second, don't throw it without taking out the allen head bold on the side (it keeps the head in place, but while trowing you want the head to be able to slide down the handle if you have a bad throw). I already knew this, but got lazy once and split the handle almost 60 of the length from one bad throw.

Trail Hawk, a fun project and a neat tool at a fair price. Do some searches and you'll find some awesome TH's customized by fellow members.

Hardly an expert but I own several and for the 60 or 70 bucks invested in them, I consider it money well spent.

Like the others have said, decent basic chopper and you will want to dress it up to your own specs. You can have a personalized "custom" for 20 bucks.

Look at the Frontier Hawk also if you want an increased cutting surface.

Don't keep it stock. Strip it down, sand it and make a weekend project out of it.

It's right in your price range and will work well for you. I have not heard many complaints other than some say the TH is a little small on the cutting size but have not heard of any gross failures etc.

I have more expensive hawks and hatchets but if I grabbed my TH, (which I usually do) I'd be just as well heeled.
