A shoveknife. This is a 6 inch strip of thin metal with cut outs for sliding back the latches of locked doors.
Trust me.I'm on my dept. highrise team, that is a specialized team of firfighters who respond to and are trained in highrise fires.Highrises have many doors that are meant for one way travel only. This is to restrict entry to places and for traffic patterns.Your best way out may be through these doors from the opposite way.
Many times when preplanning, that is,touring these buildings to learn the layouts, hazzards, standpipe conections ect.I've gone through a door I could not come back through, except I carry a shoveknife in these buildings. They work only from the side with the latch exposed, however that is the side that the door is locked.
They cost less than 10 bucks, I got mine from www.galls.com
Chance favors the prepared individual.
Just went to the site,it kind stinks.Send for a catalog or call them. Some of you many like the A-tool,which includes a shove knife, click on fire/rescue and keep going.
