The folks were antsy to get out today. Where to go? To a public area where the kids could swim, and we could fight the masses for a picnic table? Or to our own little slice of private woods? The vote was to go to one of our favorite family camp sites at Frozen Head State Park. It is 0.6 miles walk in from the parking lot, a nice, large area under the canopy for camping, next to a nice stream. It was another postcard day in east TN, with clear, blue skies and low humidity. I could get used to this.

The stream is dry except for shallow pools.

My daughter starting the fire. OK, she used a cotton ball with PJ, but she did use a fire steel, which is just a blur in her hand as she reaches for tinder right after getting the cotton to take a spark.

First course: hot dogs, simple fare, but always taste better over a fire (we really should have made hobo dinners, but this was on short notice).

Banana boats, which I don't really care for, but some do. This one was a mess. Sliced banana with chocolate and marshmallow, heated until the latter two melt.

Apples, roasted, then peel the skin, dip in sugar + cinnamon, then roast again to caramelize the sugar. Very good.

Apples diced and cooked over the coals with sugar & cinnamon. Yummy.

While we were sitting around the campfire talking, a couple of visitors wandered into camp. It was dim under the canopy, and I had trouble holding the camera still for the long exposure.

great stuff Don... those treats look yummy...:D

we went camping this past weekend, i need to try and get some pics up soon...:)

Great shots Don, looks like you had a great day out with the family. I don't usually care for marshmallows myself but those treats do look really good, particularly the apples. Your daughter has a presence and bearing that speaks of self confidence, that is a good thing... although as the father of a 17 year old daughter I do realize it can also be a two edged sword. It can really suck when you find yourself facing that strong will and and backbone you've spent years promoting and helping to develop.

Under the canopy shots can be really tricky, I try not to go any lower than 1/13 of a second but sometimes have to go to 1/10 or 1/8. Just like with shooting for distance with a rifle a lot of the trick is the trick is in the position and the breathing.

The apples were quite good. Use apples that have a good flavor and bake quickly. We used Paulard (sp?), which I had never heard of before and decided to try. They are similar to Macintosh - soft, white meat with a good flavor. And please, do not use Red Delicious, they will not have flavor.

Mist, I know what you mean. She is 17 (the younger one 15), but she is a good girl. She is doing Tae Kwan Do and just started Judo as well. The two of them are accustomed to me giving boys the evil eye, and since they were little girls they knew I would interview any boy interest while cleaning something shiny that has a caliber.
