A simple message, but one that bears repeating. It’s one thing to get a new knife. I mean, who doesn’t love getting a new knife in the mail, right? You get a box with a return address label that reads DLT or BladeHQ or similar, and your heart skips a beat. Of course it does! Mine does too. But there is one thing in this hobby even greater. Much greater, in fact. Sharing it with loved ones, and especially the next generation.

My two year old is a bit young yet, but my four year old, Jake, has shown such great proficiency with his kitchen knife over the last year that he got his first fixed blade for woods/bushcraft (Mora Craftline Pro S) as a gift a few weeks ago. There is nothing like watching him do everything from open packages to carving feather sticks and the joy on his face when he looks up at me, standing over a pile of wood shavings with his eyes beaming with pride. HE did this. His skills. His technique.

Today he and I were taking a hike, and he specifically asked me if he could bring his knife. Of course, right? It was only a quick hike, but I cut a branch so he could cut on it a bit.

So, with that, I wish a wonderful and merry and joyous Christmas to my brothers and sisters here on BFC who celebrate Christmas. May it be surrounded by new knives, and more importantly, may it be surrounded by loved ones with whom you can share our wonderful hobby.

If you have any recent pics of your loved ones using knives, let's see them. It's a time to share ourselves with our family. If you have pics, let's see 'em.

Here are some from our hike today. Jake even asked me to set up a few knife only pictures including not just his knife, but the Sadowski knife I had on me.

I don't have any children of my own, so I try my best to influence other's kids, haha.

One pal's kids are getting Spyderco Delica glow in the dark DIY kits, that they can put together. Another buddy's girls are getting blue handled Byrd Meadowlarks. I checked with him first, just to make sure he and his wife were OK with it, and I got the green light. I sure hope they all like their stuff!

Merry Christmas to everyone here at Bladeforums!

Merry Christmas to you and all yours Ben! Cute kids you got there and you're doing it right, starting them out young! I got some of my boys using knives, but I'll have to dig through them!

I specifically said sharing with the next generation. Whether it's with your kids or someone else's, you're giving the gift of teaching them to use and appreciate a tool so powerful it helped move us out of caves and spread humanity around the world. It's a hell of a gift to give. Good on ya.

I contributed to the kids starting early with knives. The cute part... that one, I promise, I had nothing to do with. If I were in the entertainment industry, I'd be the guy they'd describe as having a face for radio. Cute, they got from my wife.:D

I love it! Nothing like a great kid with a great knife.

Awesome technique, and love the kneel. I do the same thing with my little guy so that if he misses the target, the knife buries in the ground rather than in a leg... Of course, I'm guying my little ones are littler than yours, so your son probably has the wherewithal to be a bit more cautious about such things...

I've got a bunch of them, but I also have thousands of pics to dig through to find them too! lol He's getting his first rifle this Christmas too! An H&R single shot .22!

Excellent! I've been thinking of that, for the future. Had to restrain myself a few months ago when i saw a screaming deal on one of those Rossi .22/.410 combo set ups. I had to remind myself "no Ben... he's only 4...calm down..." Ultimately I did. But damn if I didn't want to get it just to hang onto it for him until it's time.

Great reading the posts ... and better seeing kids using knives ... and in a safe manner. I love seeing skills passed down ... traditions ... from knives and hunting and all the wonderful outdoor activities.

Hope you all have a great Christmas ... reading this thread made mine a little better.

I've gotten my lady friend to finally keep a knife in her pocket. I've given her several over the last year. I gave here the sak classic Christmas version for Christmas and she was tickled pink with it. Opened it first and used it to open her other stuff. She's not a knife nut like I am, but she sees the usefulness now and keeps one of several with her all the time.
Merry Christmas to all here.

Knives as Christmas gifts is exactly how I started in the hobby. He gave my brothers and I several Bucks over the years (3-4), talked me into forking out the cash for a Sharpmaker when I was 16, then taught me about different steels after that. He did such a good job that I even got the Spyderco spider tattooed on me recently. I'm addicted now, oh well.
