My father-in-law is researching shooting schools for him and his wife. He is wanting her to learn how to shoot a handgun for home defense, and he is wanting to get his CCW. He is a former Marine and is wanting the best school. He is hell bent on Frontsite, but the wife doesn't see the need in traveling all the way to Nevada to learn how to shoot. What are some other options preferably in the Southeast. Money isn't really a problem.

if they have basic skills of marksmanship and gun handling ...Bill Rogers Shooting School at Ellijay, Ga... give Melynda Lamb an e-mail at Viking Tactics, Inc..Fayetteville, N.C....... Kyle was going to offer handgun classes, but not sure...arguably the best carbine instructor out there... if you want to come south contact Manny or Ted at Universal Shooting Academy, Frostproof Fla.....I think Jerry and Kay Miculek teach in Arkansas, John Shaw at Mid South....most of these people are advanced shooting instructors

most any USPSA club will have a Master or Grand Master that can work with individuals on fundamental skills as well as private ranges

Father-in-law has the basics down, but the wife has only shot a handful of times and it has been 20+years ago. I'll forward him the info...thanks.

Have you taken the Rogers' course? If so, what do you think about it? I've shot IDPA but never took a lesson.
It is a financial commitment - handgun + rifle + lodging = 1,625 + ammo + travel costs probably comes to a total close to $3,000.

Hey Zack, totally off topic, but I noticed you're from Rome, GA... I used to live there several years ago... Was supposed to be the first graduating class of Rome High, but moved to NC at the end of my Junior year @ East Rome. Any chance you're old enough to remember E. Rome?

dextersp1.... I took an abbreviated 1day class from Bill and Christy way back in the mid 80's, prior to his developing his pneumatic system... he introduced me to the mental reward concept with instantaneous feedback derived from shooting white painted steel targets... IIRC he started putting the pneumatic moving targets together around 87.....his targets prior to that was a 3/8 inch steel IPSC silhouette 16x24 with the shoulders cut away leaving a 6x6 head.. a "U" channel welded to the back and 3 pieces of 1/2in rebar bent with a slight dog leg to fit into the box channel provided a tripod... the whole thing easily transported by a hand truck....take a gallon of cheap white house paint, roll paint the target... shoot no more than a magazine... repaint target... by the time you use up the gallon of housepaint, you have a pretty good idea of what you are doing with your practice drills

Bill is an excellent teacher, and really understands the mental aspect of shooting.... since Sept 11 has been busy doing a lot of work with SOF shooters... to answer your question, no , I haven't talked to him in quite a few years and did not take a recent course

Zack/dexter...check out the Area 6 USPSA web page for the address of South River Gun Club, between McDonough and Conyers....I'm sure they can answer your questions for local instructors and provide feed back from recent attendees
