About 7 or 8 months ago, when I still had something called "free time", I happened to be wandering around on some of the forums that I typically do not look at. I have always had a passing curiosity in acquiring some knowledge and equipment that would allow me to both enjoy and get better results from shaving. While on the forum here that discusses the finer points of blade based hair removal, I picked up this tip. At first, I wondered just how effective it might be but, after using it for over 6 months, I have become a fan.
I used disposable cartridges at the rate of one a week. At a price of $2-3 each, they are not cheap. I noticed a thread that gave a tip about extending blade life. It recommended dipping your blade into 90%+ rubbing alcohol. The alcohol not only sanitizes the blades, reducing razor rash, it also removes all traces of water as it evaporates along with the small mineral deposits left as the water dries. The post went on to say that it was these deposits that caused the blades to dull more quickly.
I tried this out and I now use the same blade for up to 1 month and experience very little dulling along the way. The blades will still shave when I change them out.
I highly recommend this and "Thank You" to whoever it was that posted that thread. I thought you JK'ers could save a few bucks on your disposable blades and use the extra cash to buy a blade that will last a lifetime!
