Tai Goo and Don Fogg are my favorites. To me no other makers come close to their originality and natural gifts as artisans. Each knife is a one of a kind treasure. Originality scores big time for me. Anybody can get very good at making the same patterns over and over again but to be able to make each knife awesome and individual is rare and is a very risky venture to do as a professional. It takes balls to create your own style and to explore all the possiblities. These makers risk it all on each knife. It must take extreme confindence in their abilities to walk the edge like they do routinely. I admire that.

Oops, I messed up. This was suppose to be a reply under my favorite makers thread. Sorry.

No problem, Tim. We'll just continue it here.

Two of my favorites are Wolfegang Loerchner and Virgil England.
No one else makes knives that look like Virgil's. He definitly has his own little niche and has almost cornered the market for that style.
Loerchner does everything with hand tools and he gets them looking better than any machine could ever do.

I agree with you about Tai and Don Fogg. They are both knifemakers that can do it all. From primitive and simple to high art. No matter what style knife they do it's done extremely well.

Thats cool. Don and Tai do not get much "press" around here and they deserve more. Don is also one of the most sharing makers out there as far as the information and time he selflessly invests in working with other makers and collectors.

I'm not surprised to see Phil pick Wolfgang.
If you were to ask 100 top knifemakers for the names of the top 5 knifemakers in the world I wouldn't be surprised to see his name on most of the lists.
