The HI Everest Kothimoda Kobra Katana (abbreviated as HI EKKK!) arrived today. For pix, check here.

Apologies to forumites who had me pegged as the mystery customer, but I just had to see this babe for myself...

First, a big thank you to the HI shipping department. Excellent 10 out of 10 job in wrapping this katana up for shipment.

Now the Katana:

Kumar did an excellent job on the blade and it shouts "Kumar Kobra"! This is why I decided to call it the HI EKKK! Very nice balance and handles nicely. Fit and finish very good. I would say that Kumar has done a very good job on this katana and will be interesting to get out the ferric chloride for the etch on the blade to see the hamon. Definitely a slicer is this blade. I'll rate this one as 9.99999999999 out of 10.

The Scabbard:

The sarkis and the silversmith did a very decent job on this. I do agree with Uncle Bill on the silver, nowhere near the 12 ounces that was initially reported and am thinking that my Kothimoda Khukuri may have as much or more. That said, very good artistic designwork with the silver. 9.9999999999 out of 10 for the artistry.

The katana fits snugly into the scabbard and the habaki certainly is excellently done and should be the model for the other kamis to follow.

All in all, I am pleased with this katana. As close to 10 out of 10 that a human made object can come....

If this raises any questions for prospective buyers, feel free to contact me.

Harry, just out of curiosity, I have to ask -- why doesn't the katana get a 10 out of 10 rating?

btw, how does the balance feel?

The balance is like that of a 20 inch Kumar Kobra - superb! Note of warning: this is just my opinion and others may feel differently.

Because if it did, I would have to sell all my khukuris and knives as none would compare. And I am rather attached to my bladed items!

Thanks for the analogy. Now Im really looking forward to it. I have the 25" kobra and it's very well balanced for such a long knife. It's a tiny bit front heavy, so I would guess that a 20" kobra would have the ideal balance proportions.

Great..I've been wanting a high performance, well balanced katana for a long time. (rubbing hands together in anticipation and getting ready to do so for a long time)

If the following katanas are done just as well as this one we should get few complaints. My only complaint was the sunar said he used more silver than he actually did. We supplied 12 oz. of silver and I think some of it disappeared in the shop of the sunar -- a common occurence in Nepal I am sorry to report. Silver used at BirGorkha is kept under lock and key and closely monitored lest temptation get the better of some employee.

Many thanks for report from the field, Harry, and congratulations on getting numero uno!

Congratulations on your Kothimoda Kobra Katana Harry! --- It has to be a real standout for sure.

Yea....I knew it was you Harry.
You didn't have me fooled one minute!
I remember back when the katana's was showing a significant improvement over the very first ones.
I beleive it was Uncle Bill who posted something about a "Very Special Katana" in the works and it was one of those "secret" projects.
And we were all told to be on the look out for it.
I believe Uncle Bill even mentioned your name.

And perhaps Pala could visit this silver workers shop and mention something about taking an ear for any missing silver?

Well it worked before.

When the silver or GOLD gets out of sight it is in jeopardy. Of course, there is a way but Gelbu is too busy to watch the silver like a hawk. We will certainly mention the silver to the sunar but whether he will take heed or not we will wait and see. Sending Pala is a last ditch effort. He is an old man but still thinks he can fight like he did when he was 20!!!!!

Old too soon, smart too late!

Uncle Bill,

Tell Gelbu that I will come over with my katanas and khukuris and attempt to reason with the Sunar involved.
