What are the thoughts out there about forming some kind of formal Becker Knife Group? The BK-G, or something similarly tasteful. It would, of course, have to be sanctioned by the Man himself. Or is there already something out there I am unaware of ?

Funny, I thought this was it.:D

The idea here is to gain (maybe) early release info on new product, SHOT show news from Ethan, and , perhaps whatever Ethan may want to add. I realize we already get most of this but there may be even more within an organized framework of membership. But, this idea appears to be going over about as well as a turd in a punchbowl. It was just that there is so much enthusiasm among the ESEE(RAT) crowd.:thumbdn:

Actually, there's tremendous enthusiasm among the Becker crowd, too, but we seem to get what we need here on the Becker sub forum.

Sure, we'd all like insider info — who wouldn't — but we're not going to get more than we already do, no matter what kind of group we form. Why? because, quite frankly, that would be bad for business.

Ethan, Paul, and Bladite keep us as informed as possible right here on the forum, and they do a darned good job, too.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't form a group, if that's what you're into. I'm just saying that I don't see any real advantage of that over the board as it exists.

Maybe you're looking at the punchbowl in the wrong way.

i find it hard to imagine that any group that formed would have any detailed insider information that we don't already have. after all, the Man posts here, and we have the KaBar staff, and other friendlies... but they don't have unlimited time either, and wouldn't choose sides...

imho, we got it pretty good right here.

also a bit confused what such a group, with membership, and all that would be for, or do?

Hey, we could have a flag, and patches, and a monthly dance... and... and... and we could put on a show. My dad has a barn we could use. Aww, c'mon, kids... it would be swell. Oh, boy, think of the fun we could have.

More seriously, if that's the kind of thing people want, I could design a logo, patch and T-shirt (that's what I do: I'm a designer — when I'm not writing meaningless drivel). But all that's something that a lot of people would have to want, and it would have to be cleared with Spark, the BF owner.

Those things would provide an identity as Becker fans, which would be nice, but I don't see a "RAT pack" type group as being particularly interesting. It's not as though our Beckers have serial numbers, which seems to be the biggest purpose of the "RAT pack": keeping track of numbers.

Actually, RAT knife serial #'s and RAT Pack #'s have nothing to do with one another, but that's beside the point. The only real purpose served is that of the 'identity' you spoke of. I noticed early on, however, that RAT members were quick to identify themselves as such and really seemed to be a tightly connected group. But, again, just an idea. I have more than enough to occupy my time which is evidenced by my low 'post numbers'.:)

Okay, I was being silly, as I am most of the time: obviously, you weren't, and I apologize if I sounded like I were putting your idea down.

While I don't see much use for a formal "club" type thing, I don't see anything wrong with supporting a stronger sense of identity for Becker owners as a group, either. Actually, establishing identity and promoting Becker knives could be a good thing. After over thirty years in the advertising business writing and designing silly stuff, I'm sure my weird, convoluted little mind could come up with something that would help if we were going to do something like that.

Apparently, I misunderstood the whole RAT pack thing. I was under the impression that it was more of a "hey, look at me. I have a higher number than you do" thing. Then again, RAT owners do exhibit a certain pride in their knives, and proudly slap RAT logos everywhere they can. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Perhaps Becker Buyers might want to do something along those lines, too.

Obviously, this would require approval/participation by Ethan, and others, if it were to go anywhere.

Well, let's run this 'Group' thing by Mr. Becker for consideration. Maybe some of you veteran forumites...dawsonbob..Bladite, and\or others that are interested can lead the charge. I have a feeling that this thing would probably catch on quickly enough with the first few members on board. Strangely , people are like that.

Ethan would have to be aboard, of course: it's his show. I would imagine he'll read this and give us some feedback at some point.

This could also put some extra strain on Bladite (he is the moderator, you know). We'd want his thoughts as well.

Ah ain't sayin' ahm fer it, an' ah ain't sayin' ahm agin it, m'ownsef.

Let's see how others feel.

the original purpose of the rat pack was to facilitate the monthly izula giveaway. the mods/company wanted the knives to go to active members of the forum, rather than to just anybody who posted in the giveayay thread. 25 posts in the ESEE forum, and you get a rat pack number. then during the giveaway, the RP#'s are entered into a random number generator to decide the winner. it has created a bit more of a family atmosphere within the subforum, but there isn't really any more "secret" info or anything than there was before. we did get some sweet knives though.

Fair enough. If there's any interest it will take on a life of it's own.

Well, I see a lot of viewing going on, where are the replies? Yea or nea.

dawsonbob, in the event Ethan agrees to a logo, can you somehow word it to be all inclusive of a formal group as well as merchandising and advertising?

All that depends on Ethan, although I am working on things that can be multi purpose. A group identity is part of what I'm doing (see what you started?).

As I mentioned in another thread, I'm waiting to hear from Ethan, but I'm not sure how soon that will be: he's a very busy man, and I doubt that this is the strongest blip on his radar at the moment.
