The BK10 on a foggy-day hike

Nice photos Lawrence. I too, like the scales. Really nice.

Very nice pictures Mr. Helm. Your dogs look like they are having a great time as well.

I have to say I love those handles as well. Keep the pictures coming!

Thanks for sharing, Mr. Helm. Looks like a very peaceful hike.

The brown on black looks great on the knife.

Are you finding the bk10 to be an ideal size for hiking?

Awesome Lawrence. Such nice pictures and those scales look great too.

Really love that second picture............... Makes me want to go sit by that tree and take a nice long nap.

The BK10 is in the "ideal range" for hiking. The BK2, 7, and 12 are in there as well. But the sheath is a big part of making a knife comfortable for hiking. I got custom sheaths but they're all still a little bit stiff which is what you'd expect with good leather. I see I didn't take any photos of the sheath -- should have.

That particular hike was peaceful but I can never count on it. We see coyotes almost every time we go down there and if food ever becomes scarce for them, one of my dogs, Duffy is bite sized. There is a video on Youtube showing a coyote grabbing a small dog but the dog put up a struggle until his Rottweiler buddy got there. Duffy has a Ridgeback buddy but if he is off chasing a rabbit while something like that happens I would try to do what was necessary. A gun wouldn't be suitable -- couldn't be sure I wouldn't hit Duffy, but one of the knives I mentioned would.

If I felt really confident a hike would be peaceful or if I wanted to go extremely light for some reason I have a lighter-weight range for hiking. I have a BK17 in that range along with 3 Ka-Bar 3/4-sized USMC fighting knives.

I also have a number of Buck knives in both ranges.

But if you are asking which BK knife I think the best for hiking, it is a little too soon for me to make a final decision about that because of the sheaths not being completely broken in yet. My thoughts at this moment are that I would rate both the 12 and the 7 above the 10. The sheath may give an advantage to the 12 once it is completely broken in. Both sheaths were made by Skystorm but the 12 comes out of its sheath more quickly than the 7.

Well keep up the good work with your hiking, photographing and knife using!

I really think the 12 will be my next becker. I love the spear point and the length.
