Let me first say that I am not proud to make this post, but feel that if I did not it would be a disservice to all the Beckerheads and those who just love KA-BAR and their Beckers.

Well, last night I had a momentary lapse of reason and decided it was time to play with one of my newly acquired power tools. An orbital buffer/polisher.... After buffing a few wrenches and other nonsense it dawned on me that I could probably use it to buff a few of my edges! On the left of my bench sat my BK9, and on my right hip were it always is was my BK15! Instantly I whipped out the 15 and started going to town on the edge testing it ever so often. I was actually fairly impressed with the results and went back for one last pass. Well as many of you probably have guessed by now... the buffing bonnet gripped the knife and sent it rocketing tip first, fast as a bullet, down into my concrete garage floor. The knife hit and sparks flew from the point of impact. When it finally decided to land I could see the tip from where I stood. Immediately I saw white concrete dust on the tip obscuring my vision, but I knew I had just completely busted off the tip of my favorite carry blade.

Now I tried for the life of me to get a good picture. I tried the cell phone and even went and dug out my camera from one of the moving boxes. The only pic I have right now is the one from my cell phone but it should give you a good idea of the damage. When I locate my upload cable for my camera I will see if that pic is any better, but still be prepared....

WOW... almost zero damage... This pic is after I picked it up and wiped off the dust but as you can probably see there is only slight denting to the tip. No chips... no breakage... no handle loosening... I was absolutely stunned that this was the end result! Now there is only a couple of explanations here. 1. I GOT REAL LUCKY... 2. The tip is that tough... I am going to believe that it is probably both but you can make your own assumptions. After this pic I grabbed my leatherman and used the diamond file to straighten it out, seriously a few minutes later, and it was as good as new...

Once again I am not proud of what I did, but I am certain that it has happened to others. I am very very impressed with the tip on the BK15. When I was looking at reviews and such for the knife before purchase typically they would say something like the tip was weak yada yada yada... but I would say this is to the contrary. Probably if I straight up stabbed the blade into the floor the results would be different but it was insane the amount of force the knife was thrown at with such little tiny damage. I have to say I got really lucky, and I am very relieved that I still have the tip the knife came with. Lesson learned, bruises earned, all in all, I am very satisfied with my Beckers...

You are lucky you didn't get it in your gut. Good steel and heat treat kept your knife intact.

Yah most definately.... also it hit right next to my wifes car... so thats all good... once again super embarrassing but... you know... for science.

that'll teach ya :)

don't shoot bamboo skewers with an air compressor either :D

Yes I learned a new Becker math equation..... Whiskey+BK15+Orbital Buffer=Hole in floor....

Im fresh out of skewers, the bk15 helped me prepare a meal the other night on my wood fire grill... but theres always time for more... lol

I love these kind of threads.
It reminds me that I'm not alone in the WTF was I thinking category.

My 15 is my primary user, and I swear ive never found anything that even mildly pushes it to its supposed limits.

LOL!! Wow, you're lucky you didn't get hurt--or killed...by either the knife or your wife ;-). I bet if that knife had hit her car, it'd have punctured into it, without a doubt and you'd really be in some trouble. :-) Glad both you and the knife (and your wife's car) all came out unharmed. :-)

Glad everyone's okay after that. Could've been BAD.
As soon as you said Orbital Buffer alarms went off in my head. No. No... NO!!!

Amazing to see what some good steel and proper heat treat can take.

ps - Rogue, I thougt Trade did that...

Yah overall it was not a good idea or a smart thing to do. However, one of the virtues of this forum is that we can share our mistakes without real concern for judgement but a shared experience to learn from. When the accident occurred I surely thought that the knife was going to be damaged severely, but I was pleasantly surprised. 1095cv is an amazing steel backed up by KA-BAR's heat treat, pound for pound it really cannot be beat. I love my BK-15, its on my belt everyday and I use it pretty much exclusively with a SAK Farmer filling the gaps. Some perception of the blade is that it is inherently weaker because of its design and grinds. After using it so much and after this incident I can positively and undeniably say that the blade is not weak. This could probably be said for all of the tweeners, but my mileage is with the BK15. Its design lends it to be an amazing slicer, piercer, and overall a good cutter.
