The Blue Buta - A Father Son Collaboration

Last weekend my 9 year old son practiced his grinding skills on a discarded blade of mine, and this weekend he put those skills to work on a Buta-II I forged over a year ago but never finished. This project was truly a father son collaboration. I forged and heat-treated the blade, but Conner profiled it and did a lot of the grinding. He also picked out the maple slabs, red liners, and dyed it blue. We made a sheath together once the knife was completed, and he did all the stamp and dye work. He put about 12 hours of work into this project over the weekend and never complained, even when he sliced his thumb open playing with my disk grinder tool rest. Conner's a tough kid, and I can't tell you how proud I am of him.

Yeah, I know I should be getting ready for Blade, but check this out.

You know I didn't see one smile on his face until he got to show off his battle wound!

Good work, and I bet your a proud papa over this one!

Great job, Conner!
Careful Scott the farm will be over run by 4th graders wanting to build knives and chase hogs!

I'm thinking the battle scar got to be good for some little girl sympathy or better yet a big "GROSS" or "YUCKY".

Thank you all. We had a good time working on it and he is very proud of his accomplishment. We are proud of him too. Michael, you may be on to something there. Sometimes I need someone extra to chase and catch young pigs.

Scott, I know what it's like to put on the blinders when a show is coming up and focus on nothing but knives. I think it's great to make time for the family especially during those hectic times. They know what's going on and appreciate it even more. Besides, they're just knives. My daughter made her first knife about that age and showed it to anyone who walked in the house for the longest time. Hers had pink mosaic pins:D. I'll bet your son showed his off proudly too.
