You guys had to know I'd be doing this eventually....

One of the guys on my team at work bought me a small gift for "Boss's Day" (yes, that's a thing) - a nice block of Ringed Gidgee. It has some freakin awesome chatoyance, not that you can tell from my dim shop-lit pictures. It is just the right size to be handles for my HDFK. So because of the occasion, the sick block of wood, and of course THE KNIFE - how could I NOT call it The Boss.

I'll take you on my handle making journey. I got them drilled and the lanyard pocket milled out on the back side, then rough cut to the profile.

Wife is out of town and I got some extra hours in the shop last night. Got the Ringed Gidgee scales all shaped and polished...

(awful indoor lighting = poor picture quality)

Dialing in the fit in the finger pocket is a very detailed task. If any surface is proud, your index finger will know it. Here more so than other areas. The tight radius is hardest of any of the profile...

Also, I think @Nathan the Machinist is doing these concave thumb pockets just to torment me!!! I don't have any CNC machinery, just a power sander. Ever try doing an inside-out curve on a power sander?!! Evil genius indeed! Plus, unlike a fuller, these are concave in 2 directions, not just one long groove.

I take it as a personal challenge :D

On the up side, my thumb with a layer of sandpaper is just the right shape to polish out the bumps (go figure, a thumb working well in a thumb pocket).

Those are sweet Tony!

Respect friend!

What a beautifully figured piece of timber! Also great execution...

Makes me want to go out and make something now!
