I have a few Boy Scout knives, and I'm always looking for something different, so this past week was pretty good to me. I hit an Estate sale and there was a lot of stuff, usually you have to be pretty early (around here at least) to get anything good in the way of outdoor gear. This guy had been a Scout about the same time I was, maybe a little earlier; there were a whole pile of commemorative neckerchiefs from the early 70's and various East Coast locations. That didn't interest me much, but it was cool to look at. What was still out was the following set. apparently to be sold together. I coughed up for all of it, no questions asked.
The Schrade set looks to still have the original edge. It's a little greasy (I haven't cleaned it yet) but all there. I was kind of worried the spoon was wrong, but it's not. I've never seen a full set together, and this was pretty cool. The compass is a military issue wrist compass by Taylor. It's marked US Army on the back, and there's a little fogging on the lens, but judging by the band it's never been used. And the KaBar certainly was used. It was pretty dark and had some rust setting in so I had to clean that up right away. The patina will come back, but rust is insidious. I'm not much for the leather handles on knives, but that's was the style. It took only a few minutes to but a heck of an edge on the blade.
Funny thing is, and I honestly don't know how I missed this earlier, but when I got home and started to wipe everything down I found someone way back when had the same initials I have and burned them in the back of the sheath. Not in small letters, they're about in inch and a half tall, so I really must have been focused on not showing to much interest when I was making the bargain.I'm not much for coincidence, but this was pretty strange. My old 60's era Case has the same thing on the back of it's sheath, only I carved them into the leather instead of burning.
