So.. if you read my very long and boring post yesterday you know that I had a senior moment.. or maybe I was just trying to capture a bit of my youth.. either way I decided that I wanted.. no needed a Buck 110 Hunter in my knife collection.. honestly it is more of a want than a need as I actually don't have a need for any folding knife.. I am more of a collector than a user.. sorry.. I wont be posting any pics of me skinning a Caribou or moose.. I cant share pics of myself on the Kenai River cleaning Salmon or thirty inch Trout on Skilak Lake.. those days have long gone.. but the memories haven't.. and one of those memories is of my first Knife.. the Buck 110 Folding Hunter... So when I discovered that not only were they still in production but available in Limited Editions.. well I jumped in with both feet.. :)
I kind do things that way.. obsessive compulsive I am.. anyway after I received the "Federal" I had to have the Magnolia.. after all they are two different knifes.. even though they look alike in photos.. But how different are they really? Well that's kind of what this thread is all about.. Now I am sure that all of you Buck 110 collectors know just how different the two knives are.. or maybe not.. either way here are some stats and a few pics of the two..

The Federal is supposed to be a modern day reproduction of the first Buck 110 as produced on Federal Ave in East San Diego, Ca. back in 1964... since I was only seven years old in 1964 and have not had the pleasure of owning one of the early models I assume that they are just that.. a modern day version of the original..

The Magnolia is supposed to be a modern day reproduction of the Buck 110 as produced in the new plant on Magnolia Ave. in El Cajon, Ca. five years later in 1969.. and again although I was now twelve years old I did not have the pleasure of owning one of these knives.. (my first and only Buck 110 was purchased at the PX at Fort Richardson Alaska in 1976).
I know TMI and not really relevant.. but hey I had to throw that in.. :)
Wow.. this is a lot longer than I had planed.. for that I apologize.. well not really suck it up.. I'm almost done..

So.. the Federal and Magnolia.. two different knives that look alike.. kind of sort of.. if you look at the specs for both they are the same other than the blade thickness.. (Federal .095 and Magnolia .120). if you look at the photos they are the same other than the pins in the scales..(Federal three pins and Magnolia four pins) . Then if you look at current production Buck 110 Folding Hunters you will see that other than the Blade thickness on the Federal they are the same..

Nay Nay.. the specs are wrong.. how so you may ask.. well I'm about to tell ya.. (and I apologize to all of you Buck 110 collectors that already know this..) these are two completely different knives.. they look alike in photos.. but they are completely different.. both in weight and size.. the Federal weighs in at a very stealthy 5.4 oz. as opposed to the Magnolia's hefty 7.8.. the Federal is .51 inches thick as opposed to the Magnolia's .61 inches..
Both are of course.. Awesome.. IMHO..
ok.. here are some pics..

Dave,

Really enjoyed your post and photos. Your story made me smile. Both great looking knives. Thanks!

Why and when did Buck beef up the handle of the 110? I have a •110• (what does that make it, mid 1970s?) and it's as beefy as my recent W-M purchase but with the squared edges. They are both as tough as hammers but seems they'd still be monsters without the extra millimeters of brass.

Zieg

Yeah, big brother got it in '75, I recall, and the chart says this is in the range.

I wish I could be more helpful.. But other than my original circa 1976 110 and these two I really don't know much about the history.. Hopefully a more knowledgeable person can answer.
All the best!!

I guess the biggest change to the 110 occurred between the Federal and everything else after that. The shape and weight is so different. I like it because of that uniqueness. I wish I would have picked one up, but they were just out of reach with what I wanted to pay at the time. Second guessing myself now though.

I agree.. I think if you were going to get one of the 50th Anniversary Bucks the Federal would be the one.. Of course I sure would like to have one of the original early knives in nice condition.. You never know. Thanks for taking the time to read the thread!!
All the best!!

Thanks for the thread it is a good read. I too will someday own a Federal because that is as close to 1964 as I will get. ha ha.
Question for those that have an original 1964, Is the grind on the Federal the same as the original?

Thanks I really appreciate it!! Great question.. hopefully someone will chime in with the answer.

I measured some of the early 110s a couple of years ago, so I’ll make a couple of comments. The first is sort of nit-picking.

“I guess the biggest change to the 110 occurred between the Federal and everything else after that.” – BuckShack – Post #10

I think it would be better to talk about changes after Version 1 since the Federal is a knife from 2014.

“Why and when did Buck beef up the handle of the 110?” – The Zieg – Post #6

I am just going to give generalities rather than the actual measurements I made in millimeters. The reason is that results of measuring depend on exactly what was measured, what the measuring device was, and who did the measuring. If I give a result of 16.2 mm, someone else is liable to say, “Oh no, it was 16.1 mm.” Anyway, here are some generalities for the frame thickness (side to side) and the frame width (top to bottom). The Version 1, Variation 1 knife was smallest in terms of thickness. With Version 2, Variation 1 there was a very slight increase in thickness because there was a corresponding increase in thickness of the blade. The frame thickness stayed pretty constant from Version 2 through Version 3. As for the width, there was very little change from Version 1 through Version 3. With the Version 4, Variation 1 knife there was a slight increase in thickness and a noticeable increase in frame width. From Version 4 to Version 5 there was a slight increase in frame width but little or no change in thickness. When Buck started using the sintered frames for the Two Dot knives, there was a significant increase in both width and thickness of the frames.

I have not measured knives after the Two Dots; putting a radius on the edges gives a different feel, but I don’t think there has been significant change in size.

Wow!! I knew someone would step forward with the information!! Thanks a lot Bert for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. Much appreciated!!

Version 3 variation 9 was the last 1/2 wide Buck. Version 4 started the 9/16 wide bucks and they have been that dimension ever since.

Mikepapa,

Enjoyed the read, certainly not boring. Did not know the distinctions between the two 110's. Thanks.

Michael5135,

Do me a favor, please. Take one of your Version 4 knives and lay it next to a Two Dot, or later, knife. Can you feel a difference in thickness. If you want to measure that's fine, and you can tell us the result.
