A Bladeforum member, Nalon sent me this awesome little compact EDC. I have a personal fascination with smaller EDC's, my absolute favorites today are the Spyderco UKPK, Peanut pattern traditional, Benchmade mini-Presidio, Kershaw Skyline and Spyderco Delica. I can easily see the Buck Vantage small being used and thrown in the lineup.

The Buck has clear pluses and minuses, it is an imperfect compact EDC but there are just so many good qualities about it being size, blade shape and ergos once the blade is fully deployed AND most importantly this awesome deep carry clip. The clip really is awesome it's a wonder why more knives don't have this clip design. The Buck Vantage small does have an achilles heel though. The flipper doesn't flip very well and it has no thumb stud and the scales are a bit slippery when trying to deploy the flipper. If you don't keep the pivot tightened the blade will be offcenter and rub as well. I was thinking I wish this thing had a thumbstud and was about to order a Kwik thumbstud kit when I thought maybe I'll just put a zip tie on it and cut off the end to make a nub.

It was a bit of a cheap fix but made the knife so much more likeable not only does it have a usable thumbstud now but it also "waves" open like an emerson out of one's pants pocket.

I do hope that folks give smaller knives a chance to be EDC'd. Sometimes you just don't need that much knife you know. = )

I agree that the small Vantage is imperfect. But for those who don't have big hands, it is a wonderful EDC.

In addition to the Vantage and Skyline, do you have other favorites that are small flippers?

So far the skyline remains a favorite but that's due to its thin frame for edc. It's not the most comfortable in hand, but it has awesome blade shape and disappears in pocket. I havmt tried any of the high end or 100 plus flippers though. The little vantage wave rocks btw...
