So, what vehicle embodies the "essence" of Busse? My vote is the Land Rover Defender, a vehicle no longer imported into this country but that was better off road than even a Hummer. With a V-8, this vehicle was unstoppable and good looking.

Unfortunately I sold mine to finance another car purchase. But for my money, the Defender was the BUSSE of vehicles - tough, resilient, and understated in its abilities.

Wow! Very cool vehicle! . . . I'm not too familiar with that particular vehicle. I do know that Aubrey, our friend in South Africa, is a major Land Rover afficianado. I can see why.

I like the D90 but it don't hold a candle to the unstopable M1A1.

I guess sometimes you have to trade off alittle fuel economy for capability. Everything is a compromise.:D

Must be a b!tch to find parking. :)

Contender- very cool! Too bad you had to give it up.

Nope...Parking is very easy. Hell nobody has the balls to tell you to move it:D

I am waiting for the king of one upsmanship to weigh in with his choice of "Busse-like vehicles". Mr. Skunk, lets see that Glendawagon (or however you say it).

ehh, F-22 Raptor...?;) ...I loved the Defender...but i'll still take an H1 Hummer...:D

Hey Raden, thanks for the new desktop pic! Only bad part about that thing, the price tag!

So I guess the early straight-handle Busses would equate with the classic Land Rovers...

Frankly, I've always been more of a fan of Uni-Mogs if you want a really serious off-road vehicle.

Folks can keep their mall-crawling Exploders, Tahoes, and Lexus on the road where they can be the station wagons their owners really wanted.

And of course their smaller cousin the Pinzgauer is kinda cute.

I'd love to get a Hummer or Land Rover, however, I think the gas bill would eat up my knife budget ;):D

Isn't there only one Uni-Mog...?

Oh yeah, how about an F-117...hey, it's even crinkle coated!:p ;) :D

Brian - looks suspiciously like a 5/16 inch straight handled Badger Attack sitting on the hood of a, could it be, a Hummer? Come on, don't be a tease, show more !!

Remember, Land Rover was sort of an off-brand but was very capable and did not always subscribe to then conventional wisdom. They used gear ratio, not horsepower and softer coil spring suspension with long travel compared to the more common (and less effective) never-bend leaf springs that were made more for load carrying capability than off road performance. To some extend, Busse, particularly early Busse can be compared to Land Rover.

Some of the more contemporary Busse designs defy comparison to mere wheeled vehicles, regardless how tough, and align themselves more with trach machines such as a D6.
