I think I've been taking knife making a little too seriously lately, so I decided to screw around for a little while. Here are the results.

My first damascus piece, o1 and l6, 384 layers. Blade is 3.25", stainless guard, pistachio handle.

This was a learning experience, to say the least. I'm amazed how much slower the hardened steel takes an etch than the unhardened steel. I think I'll keep messing around with the etch till I get something a little more uniform...read...full quench the next one :). Even after 30 minutes of etching the knife will still shave hair, pretty agressive edge though. The steel came out ok, there is a little inclusion that I'm not too happy about. All in all, I am happy with the results (for a first try), looks like my MS rating is just around the corner    :D . I figured I go ahead and post this...I've posted uglier knives... I forgot to take a shot of the other side, ugh...hang on...

Despite my best efforts the fit came out pretty damn good.

~Shot right out of HT, and a sheath I finished recently... I'll get a shot up of the sheath when I finish it.

BUTTERCUP: What about the R.O.U.S.'s?

WESTLEY: Rodents of unusual size??? I don't think they exist...

~"The Princess Bride"

MuHuHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Beautiful knife Matt! I really like your stuff dude. :D

Sorry about my little quirk there, but it just happened to be there is an article in today's local paper about Police responding to a call about a Patagonian cavy munching in somebody's front yard, and at first they thought it was a Capybara (well, after they googled giant "rodent anyway") ;)

Your knife sure doesn't remind me of a giant rodent though!!! :D ;) :D

Nick

*edited because someone must have slipped some "stupid" into my coffee today!*

Thanks man. I love those goofy bastard capybaras. I think I'm going to start calling all my knives capybaras :).

Very nice knife Matt, just the right size for a woman. :footinmou :p That is a very cool looking pattern in the Damascus and I like the leather work too.

I think it looks great, can I ask a question form a very newbie maker myself. how did you get your name so nicley on the blade? Paul

Thanks for the compliments guys.

I'll tell you what Stan, this is about the right size for a carry knife (for me at least) :)...you better watch it or you'll end up with a bowie this size ;).

Paul, I use a stamp and a stamp press (an arbor press). Mine is on the floor. I put the blade and stamp under the ram, I put all my weight on the arm, and I smack the ram several times. I really hit the ram hard, so hard that there is sometimes some distortion on the opposite side of the ricasso. Maybe it's just me, but I've found some steels are easier to stamp than others. W1 being the easiest, 5160 being the hardest.

HEY, I like it! I haven't seen a pistachio handled knife (other than the one clipped in my pocket right now) in ages. Do you plan on using more of this stuff?
I like the blade profile, the choice of damascus, everything. Keep 'em coming!

It looks very nice but I just don´t think it tastes as good as a capivara, though.:)

Thanks guys. Mongo, I will be using more pistachio in the future. The figure is pretty interesting, lots of colors too. Ivan, what does a capybara taste like? I really like they are the goofiest animals on earth ;).

Welll, it is hard to describe comparing to other types of meat, but is very good and different.
:p Considering it is a rodent, maybe rats should taste as good in snack size?

I like the way that turned out. Good pattern, nice lines and handle material choice too.

Capybara are superlarge rodents, right ? Well, so are these little cuties. I think of these as my babies. And yes, I have been told they taste like chicken... :p Jason.

What are those little things, Jason? I have never seen anything like that before... and they sure don´t look like the ocasional rat that shows up at the shop - they tend to be smaller, gray and dead by the time I see then, since I have eight dogs and they really don´t like competition. Not that I care about then - there was a time when a brave one stood there long enough not to run away from me when I turned the lighs on, but they don´t make rats as brave as that anymore...

Jason, you have my solemn vow; I will never eat a Guinea pig (assuming "normal" circumstances) ;).
