Welcome to the Cheapskate Club. To join, just reply to this thread (only once, please). The number of your post is your member number.

What is a cheapskate? Maybe you won't spend over a certain limit. Maybe you wait for things to go on sale. Maybe you buy used or trade. It's up to you.

Whether it's by choice or circumstance, welcome to the club!

My story is that I grew up in an immigrant family with little disposable income. Things are different now, but old habits die hard. I realize how hard it is to make money, and I stick to products with high value, i.e., performance to price ratio. I'm so cheap, I can't even put my member number into a signature.

I’m turning over a new leaf and becoming a cheap skate out of necessity. So I will join your club with pride.

2 kids in college. Another soon. I can no longer afford to even pay attention. Lol.

Not complaining just facing reality head on.

I've told this story before, hopefully there are people who aren't tired of hearing it.

I bought an Emerson for $180, or something like 2.25x the amount I had spent on any knife, before that. A month later, I found myself looking at Zac Brown's relatively new offerings, which I heard were "like an Emerson, but better". For another $60 or so, over and above the cost of a knife that I had already spent "too much" on to feel comfortable carrying and using.

I lost interest, for a while. Throwing more money at more knives wasn't going to give me any more satisfaction. I was still interested in the hobby, looking at and talking about knives, I just didn't see the point of buying more.

I got interested again, of course. My next purchase was $11. I set myself a hard cap of $150, and it's been a while since I went above $80. Yeah, I'll join the club.

Wait, does this mean I need a signature line....?

I reckon I'll fit in here pretty well. I come from old German stock.

Do y'all know how copper wire was invented?

....it was two old Germans fighting over a penny.😁

I'll see myself out.

Swabians, dude, Swabians...Scots exiled for being cheapskates. I have to live amongst them and it ain't pretty...

Some must've rubbed off though...I keep picking up new or newish knives at 50% or less retail from auction sites.

#14 unless posts intervened while typing this (of course...).

I once had "disposable" income and bought whatever shiny new things that had pocket appeal, but those days are gone.
I still pick up some pricey(ish) knives occasionally but I just don't use them, they're just on some old list of desirables and I'm weak when they're offered up on the secondary for a decent price.
So I do have quite the pile of nice things and I will slide one in my pocket every once in a while but I'll always have some sub-$100 beater a little deeper in that pocket when I actually need to put it to use.
So yeah, sort of a cheapskate here I suppose.
