The Cherokee Rose I snagged off the DOTD last Wednesday (7/21) set down on my doorstep today (7/24). Thanks Yangdu for a quick ship. Made my day.

No amount of internet photography can prepare you for the experience of unwrapping a Cherokee Rose from it's triangular shipping container and withdrawing it from its sheath. As soon as you see the sheathed blade you realize your expectations have not prepared you for the real thing. I was totally blown away when I unsheathed the new CR. My first reaction was to think about mounting it on the wall, possibly over the fireplace, for photos, and my second was to just head for the woods to chop down a Ponderosa Pine (:D). Then reality set in. It's raining. Not enough light for decent photography (artificial light or a flash won't get it) and kinda drippy for a field test. So I'll just have to settle for a little fondling until the weather clears. :(

But I can say without doubt that if you've ever been tempted by the Cherokee Rose you will not be disappointed if you snag one. Karen and I are going out to dinner with friends tonight ..... and I was just kinda wondering if .... you know ..... I could sorta .... bring it ...... NO! It'll never pass as a steak knife. I've got to stay rational. :D

Pics to follow as weather allows. :)

Got a break in the rain. Here's a quickie from the deck:

The CR has a 13" blade and a 7" handle. It weighs 30 oz. Hard to hold it far enough away from the camera to get it all in the frame.

NO![/B] It'll never pass as a steak knife.

Depeneds on the size of the steak...:p

Congrats...have been droolong over CR as well.....

I am afraid a lot of the carved handles may be a thing of the past as the masters of this art are gone.
Bura, Kumar and Lok were the ones who seem to have made all of them that I have found so far and of these only Lok is still around.
In fact, I don't know for sure if Lok is still carving like this or if he stopped doing it all together.

Carving is a real art and it also costs a lot of money as you do ruin a few handles along the way when doing it and those become fuel for the forge.
Unless the new Kamis are able to do this sort of thing and unless BirGorka really starts turning a profit again, carving will not be back.

You CAN ask for it by special order and Yangdu WILL make it happen, please keep in mind all I have mentioned here though before you do.
If I start seeing it in DOTDs again, I will ask again but not until I do, that will be my cue that they have enough on the ball to try again.

Warty, I believe that there are carvers and artisans of all types born every year, all over the world, learning from the elders seems to follow when any apprentice starts thier journey. Maybe one can just ask and for a few dollars more, get whatever carving done that they can imagine. Self promoting carving skills? I think so.

I am a big Bowie Fan and they certainly are big Bowie's

Congrats on some real steel

Well Original, you can do as you wish and I agree, they are there.
I don't want to be the one to cost HI the bucks to find them, I want them to show themselves first and they will.
Then, I will ask for what I am wanting to be done and not before. You are free to do as you wish.

I like how the blade of the CR is a cross between Bowie and scimitar. I wish I could afford one right now.

Great post and Pix, thank you for sharing

That's a good description Jaymo. If you stretch the CR a bit and add some more curve to the blade you'd have a simitar.

Now there's an idea! How about an HI Scimitar.
