The Christmas Hatchet * MUST READ *

A good and true story..I remember those days...and being given a BB gun and told not to shoot anything.. Thanks for the story

I didn't get a hatchet until I was much, much over 8... just like my first gun, I had to buy it myself.

That was awesome! Thanks for the post. It seems I got into less trouble with the hatchet than the bullwhip. Yep, those parents were thinking, huh?

I remember my first hatchet. I would build luxurious forts with that thing. A can of pork and beans and my hatchet and I was set. Oh the good old days.

Man, ain't that the truth. How many poor deprived children of liberals or pacifists will never hear and feel that first satisfying "Thunk" as the "Christmas Hatchet" nervously bites into forbidden flesh of some sort, the leathery hymen of manhood broken, cherry blood and wood chips everywhere.

How many poor children will never have the joy of shooting their little brother in the leg with a Daisy Red Ryder BB-Gun? That first gross of bottle rockets that were ALL YOURS, that first pack of "Black Cat" firecrackers that you lit "All by yourself". The first fish you caught by yourself, the first squirrel or rabbit you killed, cleaned and ate, ALL BY YOURSELF? The first black eye you got or gave in defense of your principles or in defense of others.

Now it's all, Hug it out boys! HUG IT OUT!! Dont fight, run away! Dont defiantly adhere to your honor, beliefs and manners. Most kids get theirs from some video game programmer or a MTV program director anyways. I am all for "Tolerance", "Acceptance" and other fancy names for not holding ones self or other accountable but not at the expense of the core values and principles that my parents and grandparents taught me. Lets let others stomp the piss out of our flag, ideals, values, borders and beliefs. Keep letting this happen and soon it wont even matter anymore.

I am proud beyond belief, I have a 16 year old daughter, she was the only person in her fairly large NW Connecticut 10th grade class when given the choice of an essay topic, "2nd Amendment" Pro or Con? , with no direct influence other than their peer group and maybe the teachers "Slant" on things that chose "Pro", every other young American, male and female, chose to write about how they would repeal this amendment. I was aghast, people, pay attention to what they feed your children's brain when they are in school, one day they may be the lawmakers who serve the coup de gras to this nation.

What do I say? Buy that kid a BB gun, hatchet, pack of fireworks. Give them a pocketknife when they are 8, teach them how to care for, sharpen and use it.

Teach them more importantly to never start a fight but to never run from one either. There is no safety in denial.

I am older now and make more money than anytime in my life, you know what? I am buying a case of shiny new "Christmas Hatchets" to distribute to boys from 7-12 years old. "Hug it out bitch, hug it out...Whack, Whack, Whack, whack....Now where can we get some of those firecrackers to put in these cracks...Timmmmmmmmmmmbuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrr" coming soon to a neighborhood or town green to you!

I love Pat McManus' stories. :D

My parents were foolish enough to give me not only a hatchet for Chistmas one year but also a folding shovel and saw. :D

I was a good boy, though. ;)
