I saw this a couple of months ago. Some company is coming out with this new laptop, either 7" screen or 10" screen, priced at $200 or $300. Dosen't have a hard drive, just flash memory, also have build in wireless and stuff.

I want to pick one up for ultra portability, but for the life of me I can't remember which company was it. I want to say Asus, but a quick glance at their website didn't find it.

Does anyone else remember reading about this cool new laptop?

Sounds more like the $100 dollar laptop project, which is now at $188.

Laptop.org is the site. It's not really for sale to the public, nor does it run standard OS and software.

Both Intel's Classmate and the OPLC project are bringing out laptops that you describe. As far as I know they only available as development kits and have not been released. Both are aimed towards school children, both physically and interface wise. I have developed some on the OLPC Sugar interface under QEMU. It is cool but once you see it in action you know it is really geared towards kids.

The tech behind it is really cool though, especially the meshed wireless networking. Check out http://laptop.org for more details.

The Asus EEE PC is based on the Intel classmate. What is strange is they have switched from Mandriva to Xandros . Nice to see that they are aiming at the consumer market though.

EEE pc is the one I was thinking about. Seems they are not yet for sale, should be released by end of september. I wonder if they will stick with their $199 price thou, but I'm sure I'll spend more for higher memory, 2GB base seems way too low.

I called asus, the guy I talked to say it's gona be released by end of this month, and price is still $199.

But with that low of base spec, by the time it's decently equipted, it may not be a bargin anymore. :(

Although the OLPC is not intended to be a commercial product for American consumers, I am excited about some of the technology being integrated into the market. Using RAM instead of hard drive, screen readable in daylight, etc.
