The coolest knife I've made so far!

I had purchased a 2" thick slice of a stabilized birch burl trunk about 10 years ago. I've been using it over the years on knife handles. When I started out the trunk slice was about 1.5' by 2' with the barky burl on the outside ring of it. I was trying to come up with a unique handle for the drop point hunter I was working on, and while looking at some of the birch burl that was cut into handle size pieces, I realized that I could leave the barky, gnarly stuff at the back of the handle. This is what I came up with!

4" blade length forged from a 52100 ball bearing. Brass guard and the aforementioned birch burl with one mosaic pin through the hidden tang.

I made this knife for a friend who got me a 4-1/2 foot diameter wrought iron wagon wheel.

I took the photos late at night, kind of quickly. I'll be taking better photos tomorrow with my light box and tripod.

I hope you enjoy what I came up with.

I left the but natural on a letter opener I made for my mom. I love the natural butt look!

I've always love the grain patterns and swirls that burl wood forms. Thats a sweet piece of wood for sure. Wood is good!

Thanks everyone for the nice compliments. I've got some more of this stuff, so I'll be making more of this handle type in the future.

Where do you live in NE Oklahoma. I'm going to be in Tulsa from July 5 to 9. Would love to hook up at your shop.

Hi Scott. I'm a good 50 miles if not a bit more from mid city Tulsa up in Bartlesville. "Green Country" as its called here.

Right now its overgrown and green too with all this rain.

I have a hunch based on my new neighbor that I won't be in the shop much today or possibly tomorrow but we'll be around. Usually I end up having to baby my dog on the 4th and on New Years. She gets very upset at all the fireworks so I'll more than likely be consoling her until the fireworks and my new neighbor get done with their shows. I noticed my neighbor has already started early so it brought me in a bit sooner than I thought for today so I am probably strapped in the house for the rest of today. Tomorrow I hope he is out of noise makers. :D My address and contact info are on the first sticky post of my forum here in the makers section in post number two. Feel free to drop me an email. Its kind of out of the way to get to us though so don't feel obligated. Its a long haul 100 plus miles round trip out of your way so I understand if not.

I may give you a shout. My step daughter and her husband moved to Tulsa recently and we're going there to visit. I'm not sure where they are exactly. I'll no more when I get there. Plus, I have absolutely no idea what they have planned for me during our visit.

Here's some better photos. I set up the light box and used a grape theme for the photographic presentation. The sheath was finished too, so I got some photos of that also.

Tell me what you think.

More photos. I dyed the sheath to closely match the little bit of dark color in the birch burl. It will let the light parts of the burl stand out nicely when the knife is sheathed. I hope my friend likes this knife. It's basically a "thank you gift" for his finding of some free wrought iron for me.

Nice looking knife and sheath. Looks like you won't be needing my services anytime in the near future! Good job!
