At the Boise show last year, I gave Michael Rader a Damascus Angle Peen Hammer...just because I really like Micheal, and he is a wonderful person.

Today when I picked up the mail, I found these in a package from Michael....

Twist Damascus handle Broaches with Black Palm handles! Micheal made me one of these tools out of straight steel a couple of years ago, and they are absolutely the best thing going for building hidden tang handles. I have no doubt that they will work as good as they look!

Michael doesn't offer them for sale, but he did tell me to pass along that everyone is free to copy the design.

Thanks Ed. You guys should have heard Ed gushing. However, Ed's damascus hammers really are the COOLEST knifemaking tool ever!!! I'll have to clean it up and post a pic for you guys. I actually used it to forge out these little guys.

Anyway, you guys are all knifemakers - so make your own damn broaches... John Davis!!! Here is a tip: offset the teeth a little bit. Grind/file them in like you would imagine doing (I use the cutoff disc on my Foredom), but then grind the left corner off of one tooth, then go to the next one and grind off the right corner. I heat-treat the whole piece like a normal knife (this is 1080 & 15N-20 damascus) and draw back the shank/handle. I have a low-temp salt tank and I tempered these at 430 (three times for about 45 min each) and then held the scraper-end up in clamp and soaked the shank/handle in the salts at about 525 +/- for an hour+. Give it a try.
