i typically dont like knives with rings or karambit style knives but this one looks really nice, doesnt cost much either

not my video

Having a ring on that doesn't make any sense to me.

CRKT's website advertises it as being able to work as a kubotan. Holding the ring with your index finger means the... hilt.... sticks out from the other end of your hand, giving you a hard surface to use for reminding knuckleheads that they've forgotten how to behave.

Okay.... I know just enough about Prac/Tac territory to guess that if I have time to putz around getting my folder out of my pocket (Tueller Drill, anyone?), I have time to reach for something more useful.

If you think it's nice, absolutely go for it! Post pictures!

Just don't use it as a compliance tool, yeah? There are better options.

not just that but the ring itself can be used as a knuckle for punching when its around the index finger, when its on the pinky it i can be used a striking pommel

Really?

I suggest you try "punching" something (like a slab of meaty pork ribs on the meat side) w/the ring round your index finger (to simulate punching someone in the chest) and see what happens.

My guess is that you'll hurt yourself when the thin unrounded OD of the ring impacts your finger when you anything firm (like the rib bones) and would not cause any greater harm that you would with your fist alone. The impact (if substantial) could also deform/damage the ring.

An (illegal in all states) 4 finger "brass knuckle" would be much more effective. If fact, just a large regular ring (legal) or one of those specialized single finger "brass knuckles" (questionable legality) would also work better.

I also don't see how using the ring around your "pinky" would be at all effective as a "striking pommel." You'd be more likely to damage/deform the ring and injure yourself (in the same way as above) if you tried to use it in that way.

Using the ring to hold the unopened knife as a striking device makes more sense but you can use any straight firm object (like a pencil, ala John Wick) in that way.

The unopened knife is too large in width and too short in length to use effectively in executing certain strike, pressure point and control moves that you can use w/standard kubotans, like the 3 that I own; one nylon, one aluminum and a Hinderer pen.

The only useful purpose that I think of for the ring is to use it as an attachment for a belt clip but it why even bother w/that if you can just clip it inside w/the deep pocket clip provided but if you do that the size/placement of the ring will cause it to stick visibly out of your pocket, like a pocket karambit but w/o the benefits of one.

Because, if you use the ring to remove the knife from your pocket, the knife can then ONLY be used as a striking tool because the knife does not have a wave feature to open the blade and your index finger is unavailable to open the knife using the flipper because it's inside the ring. So, IMO it's totally useless as a "karambit" too.

If you want a karambit, buy a REAL karambit. I have many of those; some fixed bladed and some folders. All of the folders have a wave feature of some kind to open the blade when you remove it from your pocket.

I also own a lot of CKRTs, including the Provoke (which has its own issues but is more suitable to use as a karambit than this knife is) and I have no "problem" with the company generally BUT this knife IMO is very poorly designed POS!

So, the Ibi is a definite HARD PASS from me.

OK , If you like the ring to help pull the knife , or just the look and feel ...but NOT my choice for a SD/ fighting knife .

For a small stick / kubotan , better off to carry a 2XAA flashlight or similar , IMO .

If you pull a folder to use as a stick , you still have a knife (legally a lethal weapon ) in your hand . Might get you shot .

If you really want a SD/ fighting folder , then get serious . Ring or no ring .

I'd suggest the Ibi as a folding bird and trout knife. More difficult to clean when you get home, but a whole lot more realistic use-case.

I’ve got it; it’s pretty cheap but it’s D2 so I can’t complain about the steel. It feels surprisingly good in-hand, I find the ring isn’t a benefit but it’s also not detrimental. It’s fun to fidget with and can make it easier to grab from your pocket, but not significantly so. It feels best when the ring is below or on your pinky. It flips pretty nice, good to fidget with. I EDC it when I’m not doing anything special, it’s a good box opener and fidget toy. 8.5/10 build quality, 7.5/10 knife overall

Welcome to Bladeforums, Mskaggs.

This thread is from 2021, and I've let my enthusiasm get away from me like this, finding a thread about something I really like, and not checking to see if it's a current discussion. Arguably, I'm the leading authority on Thread Necromancy, but that's a different story.

It's good to know that the knife works as intended, since I don't believe we ever actually got to a discussion about it's functionality....
