As many of you know, I've been working on scales for the ZT 0650ST Combat Auto. I'm happy to say that I have got the crossfire mechanism to work properly with one of my scales. It fires and unlocks properly and the safety is secure. It isn't finished yet, but everything else is cosmetic.

The wood I'm using is desert ironwood. I figured that, if anything, it would be strong enough to work. The scales are bookmatched and I will soon be working on the other side.

The slot was drilled out and finished with chisel and sandpaper. I cut the recess with a router bit mounted on the drill press. The holes and countersinks are pretty straightforward.

I didn't expect to get this to work on my first attempt. I'm pretty happy right now.

I'm not really happy with the recess for the lock. It functions perfectly, but it looks like crap. Maybe I'll get annoyed enough to fix it some time.

Now I can start on the other side. Should be pretty easy. The other side is a bit thinner and should make the two handle slabs even out (as the aluminum on that side is thicker).

Way to go Phillip! That looks really awesome. Let me know when you are ready to do mine!

Beautiful work Phillip. Your scales are always a great addition to the beauty of a knife.
