I met STeven (infamous Kohai999) back in 2004 and he introduced me to the world of custom knives. I am thankful that he did because it has become a tremendously rewarding hobby which I truly love.

I remember the first knives which STeven showed me to this day and in particular, an amazing Vaquero Bowie by Texas maker Mike Ruth that got me hooked. Soon after, I attended the AKI show in San Diego with STeven and started to understand, through his excellent insights, what makes a great maker and a great knife. That is when my borderline obsession began with the likes of John Young, Phil Boguszewski, Burt Foster, John W. Smith, Loveless and many others.

Recently, I was feeling in need of a new maker whose work got me desirous and left me in awe. I got my fix at the Plaza Show when I met Mike Quesenberry and saw his work.

So here is the question and purpose of this thread… Which makers have you recently discovered that have generated that excitement and which knives did it???

Well, he's not really a knife maker...actually he's definitely NOT a knife maker, but he is a book maker.

Dr. David Darom has had a huge impact on me; not only have his books inspired, but he was responsible for getting me to 2011 AKI where we he introduced me to a world I'd only ever read about.

David does an amazing job with his books and his "Custom Folding Knives" is always on my coffee table. In fact, I use it to introduce friends to the hobby.

My favorite newbie question...

"What do you use these knives to cut?"

Instant indicator they don't get it and we are NOT going to see them at the next AKI. LOL!!!

First maker that sprang to mind for me was Stuart Branson - terrific diversity, insane hamons, real passion for the craft, very solid value.

For me it is David DelaGardelle, a young maker who is following in the footsteps of makers like Rick Furrer, Jake Powning and the likes.

Thad Buchanan-Not really a "new" maker(10 years or so) but he does great work in the Loveless style.

Marcus Lin-grindling incredibly good knives in the Loveless style. I'd love to get a Hideout from him.

David Sharp-grinding incredibly good knives in the Loveless style. He gets it, his value is superb, and his renditions are spot on. Youi should order a knife from him before his wait time triples and his prices double.

I went to the Plaza Show recently and there were at least twice as many Loveless style makers at the show....the ones mentioned above are the best. I can't really think of any new forged knifemakers that are tripping my trigger in the same way, but will probably find one or two at Blade that do amazing work.

Joe Paranee is super impressed with the work of Claudio-CAS and Sam Lurquin, but I am not feeling the enthusiasm yet.....I need to see some new stuff for sure.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

David Williamson is doing a k390 small fixed blade for me, Jeremy Robertson with the El Patron.... both are outstanding makers from what i know

Marcus' Loveless stylings are excellent, I haven't gone there yet.
Did grab this one, 5160 comp cutter.

He can grind and sharpen and edge to do whatever you want.

Samael Lurquin comes to mind as well. :)

Sam Lurquin's work floats my boat in a big way. This one is about as cool as a small knife gets:

And his damascus Tsavo bowie that Joe posted in a separate thread has me Tsalivating.

This thread is working out great. I have already discovered a few new makers that look amazing.

JP - That Claudio knife is off the hook!

Bob I had dinner with Robert two years ago at Blade

Great artist and very nice

Yeah, Robert is a great guy. That same year at Blade (2 years ago), I was up LATE into the night with Talanian, Robert, Mikkel Willlumsen, Andreas Lorenzi, Jon K and a few of the other guys. I ordered a set of chopsticks from Robert, like the ones that are parts in his major pieces. Got them the following year, cool stuff. During the show, I helped Robert about a dozen times taking apart and putting back together two of those major pieces, like the one in my above post. Really awesome pieces. Great stuff, I agree - and he's a great guy, too.

Yep, Robert is a great artist and guy........even my wife, who doesn't care about knives at all, likes his work!!!!

SO many makers have come into our sights in the past few years that have stretched boundaries, or have established strength in traditional patterns.

All of the ^^^^ above qualify, I agree!

My entry: Serge Pachenko for his artistic take on 'relic' and knives and simple creativity.
