Not news to the forumites here, but I found it very entertaining. Although the use of the glass pane is interesting.

That's a fun, informative read.

I'd definitely worry about using 1/4 inch glass. I'm sure that, if it's on a hard, flat surface, it's quite safe, but I don't much l care for the idea. If it were thicker, sure.
I've used the glue-sandpaper-to-tile method. As the article says, it works great.
 
Yeah , the way my luck runs I probablyshould use tile. Been to the ER over glass before. That guy is hilarious though. I just picked up a couple of planes yestrerday from a resale shop. A box and a smoothing. Guess what I'll probabaly be doing this weekend.

Years ago I used that method with plate "float" glass to true the bottoms of my planes. Worked a treat. It amazing how unmilled & out of true many planes are. Many are just rough flattend on a giant belt sander.

The older planes are usualy truer. over 90% of my Records & Stanleys are pre ww2.
