The Day Started Out Uneventfully...

I had been wanting to go cut some staves from a coppiced Cherry tree for walking sticks while the sap was down for over a month. Today seemed like a good day to do it... The cutting of the staves went well, and I actually had a relaxing sit in the woods for a while, before heading to the grocery store for supplies on the way home before the snow hit.

The 12 inch machete made quick work of the staves, and man I love this sheath Heber made.

Then I left there and went to grab some coffee before the trip home. While at Stone Cup the snow started falling, so time to head out...

On the freeway the snow started getting a little heavier but still nothing much. So I popped into the Bi-Lo for a few things on the way.

On the way up still nothing laying on the road...at first anyway

But apparently on up it was laying already, and some people in two-wheel drive vehicles were having issues and it took over an hour to go the other three miles home. After about twenty minutes sitting here, up come the blue lights...

Some gave up and started backing back down

Then once past the bottle neck, the rest of the incline section was sort of a slolom between cars in an assorted array of dispersion...

At the top they had the road blocked not letting anyone go down the mountain, and traffic was backed up a half mile or so up there

But after that the rest of the trip was quiet, and I finally made it home two hours later, with all the supplies still unopened, and very glad I had filled up on fuel earlier :) I hope everyone out there made it home safely tonight! Looking out the window now, it looks like we got about 7 or 8 inches of snow, and are supposed to get a couple more hour's worth starting at 3 am...

Man, I want a fiddleback bad and that machete is a beautiful example!
I'm also glad I live in parts of Canada where if you don't know how to drive in snow you wont have a license for long!

It's scary how quickly weather can change and it always amazes me to see how some choose to drive in bad conditions. Glad you made it home safely.

I'm just now leaving for work and yep, it's snowing. Again :)

Living in rural areas taught us to ALWAYS keep the tank topped off and a shovel in the car. Good thing you were prepared.

Loving my Filipino borong and REALLY wnat to try Andy's 12" machete- I have to make that a priority. His handle looks like an excellent upgrade to a classic shape.

My in laws are in Chattanooga, and I've got a lot of friends in East TN. In laws got 8 inches, and they NEVER get snow. I'm a native of the snowy north who likes to pick on my southern friends when school is canceled for the threat of snow, but this is serious snow for them. Dangerous snow. Hunker down and stay safe, my friend.

Be safe down south. My folks a are supposedly getting up to 10 or 12" in North Carolina. It is going look like a war zone down there if so.

That Heber sheath is pretty sweet

Glad you're home safe with all intact. From spring activity in the morning to winter by night, that was quite a day.

As for the 12: it is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.

I got caught in a mess like that once...sat in my truck for three hours cuz I was blocked in. Till someone's car in front of me overheated and caught on fire! Fire trucks came it was crazy!

Glad you reminded me about getting a machete sheath. What is Heber's contact info? Thnx:-)

Mist, glad you made it home. Looks like you ran into quite the storm. Nice to see that machete sheath seeing some time in the woods. :)

BTW, my contact info is in my signature below. Right now I have Three 12" Sheaths in stock, just like Mistwalkers in various colors. Email me for details.

I love snow, just put bindings on a 4. pair of mountains skis:cool:

Everybody here have snow tires in winter (we have studs on the Landcruiser winter tires since we drive a lot in the mountains). Got a few inches a couple of days ago, but it is melting too fast here in the lowlands.. :o

Remember being in NY during a snowstorm a few years ago and watching the ensuing chaos while shaking my head:rolleyes:

Good thing you came home with no damage

The 12 inch machete is simply awesome :)

It's not just the snow here, it's the wet snow combined with steep hills and sharp curves that cause problems. Here, even people who have lived in places like Michigan their whole lives run into issues. Last year in Michigan, we had a total show fall of just over 9 feet, or roughly 3 meters, and thanks to the flat terrain and straight roads I was in two-wheel-drive as often as I was in four-wheel-drive. That last shot showing the incline, no two-wheel-drive vehicles were making it up, regardless of front or rear wheel drive. Here in the winter, good all-wheel-drive would be the optimum.

It changes quickly here with elevation. It can be raining in the valley, freezing rain half way up the mountain, and then snowing on top... but if any of those stalled vehicles had been 4x4 or all-wheel-drive, there wouldn't have been any issues that time. As it was we sat still for so long, the person behind me, and several behind them, had no traction when we finally started moving. Even on the slight grade we were on at the time. At the steep part of the incline, the truck in front of me and myself went around a half dozen or so of the vehicles that were in front of him. Be safe up there man.

The winter in Michigan taught me a thing or two :) I have used my quarter mark as my empty mark most of my driving life, but as soon as I heard the words "5-8 inches of snow coming" I filled the tank :). Plus I was well stocked with gear and supplies :D

My fondness of the barong is exactly what drew me to the 12 inch.

Yeah, we only get this much snow occasionally now. It was common in the 60s and 70s, but not so much now. The last time we had this much here was Christmas Day 2008. The freezing rain we usually get here in this rain forest is MUCH more dangerous though.

Yeah, looking at the radar it looked like NC was gonna get nailed. I LOVE this sheath Heber made.

Yeah, that's actually kind of common here in a way. I have spent the morning and afternoon working in long sleeves or a light sweater, and then have fern popcilcels by that night with freezing rain and sleet. It can get crazy.

It can get nerve-wracking. I was really hoping none of the people backing down slid into anyone causing more issues.

Glad you made it home safe. Stay warm my friend.

Thanks Preston, me too man :)

Lol, I thought for a time there I might have to learn to ski, but yeah I am glad I didn't have anyone slide into me! :)

Glad old red got you home safely Brian.

Me too Kris! This old truck has been good to me, from south Florida swamps to Michigan blizzards, she always gotten me home safely, and for that I am very thankful!

Sorry for making light of the situation. I didn't realise the seriousness of the storm.
Glad you made it home safe!

You left Michigan already?!

Snow mixed with the Tennessee hills doesn't sound like my idea of fun.
