Pavarotti passed on this morning. He was probably the greatest singer who ever lived..
Goodbye, Big man.

Who can forget the sound of half a million people shouting their joyous approval in Central Park as he finished the last note of Puccini's Nessun Dorma:
Dilegua o notte!
Tramontate, stelle!
Tramontate, stelle!
All' alba vincerò!
Vincerò! Vincerò!

Depart, oh night!
Set, you stars!
Set, you stars!
At dawn I shall win!
I shall win! I shall win!

It is the dawn, and he has indeed won.

I heard him sing in a concert, in probably 1998 or 99. He was already just a bit past his optimal singing days, the voice had lost some of the bloom and was sounding a bit dry.

But it was well worth the ticket price, just to say you'd done it. Wonderful sense of musical line. He's done an enormous amount to bring people to Opera who'd never have otherwise given it a listen.

He really was a musical legend. Ya know, looking at the big guy you would have thought that heart failure would have done him in sooner than later. He was a big dude.
Cancer is a horrible way to go. Pancreatic cancer is worse still:(

He really did have a distinct voice. I mean, to me Opera sounds like Opera...unless Pavarotti was the voice on stage. Truly a musical treasure.

I was fortunate to be at one of his live performances. I will never forget it...it was that magnificent.

The 20th century began with Caruso and ended with Pavarotti. End of story.

"Nessun Dorma" is precisely the piece that came to mind when I first read the news.

I might not go as far as DIJ to say greatest singer ever, but definitely a loss for the music world. :(

I sound like Pavarotti in the shower;)

But I don't remember Pavarotti singing The Strawberry Roan...:):)

He had an amazing set of vocal cords. He was a big boy with big lungs to power his gifted voice and he did that well.
