On January 19th of this year Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger allowed the
first death sentence to be served in three years, and the first under
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. That is almost copied straight from a
news site (because honestly if I hadn’t, there’s no way I’d have been
able to spell Arnie’s name!)

Anyway, I recently caught an ad for a movie on Court TV called The
Exonerated. It’s based on true stories of several people who spent
years on death row for crimes they didn’t commit. The original version
was a play which inspired my interest in the subject of the death
penalty. I specifically remember one guy who spent something like 20
years on death row before finally being cleared.

Now before someone jumps all over me: I’m not saying that the guy who
was just executed in California was innocent. But does anyone think
it’s acceptable that even one innocent person could be executed? I
think it’s about time this country joins the rest of the civilized
world and adopts a more humane approach. For those of you still on the
fence on this issue, I’d check out this movie, because if it’s anything
like the play the personal stories will astound you. I think it airs on
January 27 (but check courttv.com just in case I’m wrong). And if you
have thoughts on this issue, I’d like to hear them.

Welcome to Bladeforums. Please check out the whole website before posting this sort of thing. It really fits MUCH better in our Political Arena.

Thanks, bob, but that response fits better in Whine & Cheese. I'm in the process of getting this thread moved to where it belongs.

Welcome to BFC. Strange way to start but oh well. Apparently you can check your right to descent at the door.

Mr. bob bowie,

Show a little decorum, please.

This thread is in the general forum at this time. Please conduct yourself accordingly.

Aw, Chucky-

CourtTv spammers have spammed these forums before, as recently as last month(political forum).

As far as my response, I've seen far worse in various general forums, including the Balisong forum, which you moderate.

Posts like this are interesting because they illustrate the way we appear to the general public. If a guy gets a bug up his a$$ about the death penalty, he'll figure he can get a rise out of people by posting on a knife forum. Why? Maybe to the average person we're about one step away from a white supremacist group. Kinda disturbing, isn't it? I think it says more about them than us though.

Looking over Bob Bowie's link, it's clear that tflon has a particular interest, but not particularly knife related - he didn't just happen to drop in here.

Actually, I believe that this is the cyber-example of socalled "guerilla marketing."

This person has now made two posts in our forum under two usernames but unknowingly leaving forensic evidence that we can trace and prove that it is the same person (and yes, Mr. Bowie, I suspected immediately that he had a history and I made the investigations that established it leading to his banning, thank you very much). In both cases, the post referred to something on Court TV. This person is actually a marketing professional working either directly for Court TV (probably not) or for an agency employed by them such as Edify Group.

From the Edify Group website said:
Edify Group has developed and refined an approach to interacting with online markets through avatars to get insight on critical marketing questions... Provocative dialogues, can also be used to create buzz and interest in new offerings, and to launch viral marketing campaigns.

Being targeted by these sorts of people is a direct result of the fact that bladeforums.com is recognized as one of the "Big Boards" on the internet. We are the 260-somethingth largest and most-active discussion forum on the
internet. Wherever 28,000+ people gather, someone is going to try and find a way to advertise to them. We don't sell banner or -- God-forbid -- pop-up ads here and were're very strict about advertising posts in general. So, "provocative dialogues" through "avatars" is the approach that such people sometimes take.

Now, in the future, if any of you see posts which you suspect are spam, the very best thing you can do is click on the little red and white triangle-looking icon in the upper right-hand corner of the post. That will report the suspect post to the moderators. Please, please, please resist the temptation to "spam spot" or otherwise respond to the spammer. These people want to create interest in their products, they want to generate replies, they want to stay at the top of the forum list. When you reply, even if just to shout words that can't be typed without replacing some of the letters, you "create buzz" for them. That's what they want. You're playing into their hands. Don't let them use you like that. Don't do their bidding. Instead, use the report post feature and let the moderatorial staff handle it quietly.

Thanks.
