Once again Death has taken one of my brothers. Once again that SOB has taken one of the good guys. In 6 years 3 of my very best friends have passed on.

Yesterday a friend and mentor has passed 1 month short of his retirement. He was looking forward to spending his time in the hills of West Virginia. His life ended in those hills after suffering a sudden heart attack at age 52. We were to have his retirement party on Wednesday.

Don devoted his life to firefighting and to the people whom to he chose to make his friends. I was lucky in that he took me under his wing after our Captain died 7 years ago. When he came to our engine company he fit in well and we worked like a crew that had worked together for years. We had each others backs and did the job that was expected of us. Out Lt. never had to ask us to do anything. We instinctively knew what had to be done and we did it. He had his share of problems but he had us as his support group and we leaned on each other in good times and in bad.

Don was a character. Always quick with the jokes and ready to break your chops over the most menial of things. If Don was busting on you then you knew he liked you. He must have liked me a lot because everyday I got it from him. I'm going to miss that most of all.

RIP Crusty. You will be missed.

Oh, man, I'm sorry to hear that. It is a shame when the good guys don't get to kick back and enjoy the rest of life. I bet he helped a lot of people get to continue with theirs.

My deepest sympathies and condolences. There is just something wrong in being cheated out of your R&R after a long and hard working life.:(

sorry to hear that ken.

locally, we lost 3 CHP officers in the last two weeks. two were issuing citations and were struck on the shoulder by careless motorists, one was killed following a collision during a pursuit.

take the time to mourn and remember your friends.

Condolences for the families and for you guys.

Sorry to hear of your loss, may the bagpipes play and sirens wail in his honor.

Sorry for your loss.

Cherish the memories, and be thankful to have known someone like that.

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. Condolences to his family and all of his Brothers.

My condolences, though they are worth little at a time like this.

52. So young.:(

My only advice -- remember him and celebrate his life.

Only the good die young....ain't it the F**king truth. Sucks man, sorry to hear it.

You brought a tear to my eye Bro..my dad died at 52. Its way to young.:(

Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend and Brother on the crew, sometimes the loss of a friend hurts more than the loss of a family member because you chose him to be your friend.

Smoke and prayers for you and his family, extended family especially.
