This is a unique one, on many counts, and not just because I don't often make stick tang knives, or even hunters, for that matter...

I'm trying to get ALL of the knives I've got laying around the shop done.

DONE.

Not mostly done.
Not waiting on something to do x.
Not I'm not feelin' it.

This knife was the worst culprit. I've been trying to figure out when I started it, and I kind of think it was July...

July of two years ago. At least.

That's pretty bad.

The blade is Talonite, of all things, with a stainless steel guard with black G10 spacers, and a gorgeous piece of curly maple which I believe came from a tree on my brother Derrick Wulf's property in Vermont. I had it dyed and stabilized. As always, my crummy photo doesn't do it justice - the wood has scads of flash and chatoyance.

So there you have it. Special. Heaps of procrastination, cool blade material, even cooler handle material from a yet cooler still guy, and a perfectly functional hunter. Now I wonder how long it'll take before I make a sheath for it...:D Not sure if I'll sell this one, or keep it. There's a lot of 'specials' in there, no?

Blade is 4", handle is 4-3/4", or 5" to the front of the guard.

What are you procrastinating on? Show us whatcha got! OR, hide it like I did for two years...:)

Looks like two years worth of blood, sweat and tears in that handle!

Carefully aged like a fine wine.

Terrific work!

I have a piece of Talonite for several years .To trade? So You again have two years to make a new one , and I will have the best knive I've ever seen on the net .............. :)

Very nice knife. Should be very durable cutter and has a gorgeous handle well shaped and finished. Enjoy fondling it while you plan and build the perfect sheath.

That's a beautiful knife, Matt. What caliber are those cartridges?

I'm trying to build a desktop box for 4 bottles of ink and 9 recesses to hold fountain pens. It will have blackwood, Honduran rosewood, curly maple dyed yellow and copper...the schematic has been sitting on my desk for four years, and I finally got all the materials together last year......

My wife just gave me a box from Theirs-Issard for my straight razors that have been sitting around the office all over the place...seven of them.....now I'm supposed to hone them.....

There are probably 10 knives waiting for new handles.....

Want me to keep going?

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Very nice knife M.Gregory, I'm jealous that you got to use Talonite. How was it to grind? I've been looking for some for a while now, and I can't even seem to get ahold of Stellite 6k!

As for procrastinating on a blade, there's a particular very huge sword that I've been wrestling with, and I swear it is getting done DONE now that I've finally cracked the code for the thing: The length goes from a non-equilateral octagonal main tang, to nearly hexagonal on the foregrip tang, to a fullered hexagonal blade that then flows into a wide, flat appleseed business end. By far the craziest thing I've ever attempted, sword-wise.

Vermont sugar maple is the best maple in the world. Might have to grab a few logs to bring back to Germany with me when I go back to sell my house in Vermont this spring... :(

Beautiful knife Matt. So good to see that maple put to use on such a handsome knife. And also nice to see you still remember how to make a guard :D

As for me and my unfinished projects, dude please. Don't even get me started. I spent ten years building my dream shop in Vermont and then I went and fled the country. Now I have a tiny crappy new shop in my Bavarian mountain hovel and a whole new pile of unfinished knives on my bench. If I finish half of them I'll consider it a success.

That's a sweet little hunter Matt. And if that maple is from Derrick's digs then it must be extra-special! Well done!

Very pretty knife! Love the color.
And oh, I can play THIS game... :D

Thanks gang!!!

The red is K&G red dye, and the bullets are good ol' .308 Winchester.

Working on yet another procrastination project today, after tweaking a couple big kwaiken (well, one of them is way too big to be a kwaiken...:D), so stuff is getting done.

I think.

got nothing but incomplete projects. You actually own one of the few completed ones, lol.

I love the title of the post. We have all done the same. Often.

That knife does look very nice, even if it isn't a style you usually make. Good story on the materials, too.

I have another blade from the same billet as the one above, that is almost identical in shape. It has been sitting on my bench, out of the way, for at least a year. Heat treated and ready for final polish. Actually, I may have to heat treat it again. I went though a period with no electricity, and I believe I annealed it so I could shape it more with files prior to heat treating. Still, it is a beautiful pattern weld, but I just haven't been interested in making two knives with similar blades. I only do that when I am working on commissions.

take care,
kc

will I ever finish anything? :)

Kevin, this is awesome.
